I haven't posted any pictures for a while so I thought I would post some new shots. I visited a friends tank last week and took some shots. All were taken with a Canon 30D and mix of lenses (17-55 F/2.8 IS, 60mm F/2.8, or Sigma 150mm F/2.8). Enjoy!

Blazer88, I just went through your flickr gallery and I must say that you have to be one of the most talented photographers around. Your fish shots are especially amazing.

Thank you for sharing.

A 30D? I didn't even realize there was a 30D. That's how out of the loop I've been.

Great shots. You did a great job with those fish, which is always a tough subject since they are moving targets.

Actually now there is a 40D. The 30 is the old model.

Nice stuff!

Thank you for reminding me yet again, Poukie.

Doug, what does the 40D cost?

BlueCorn

About $1300

That's not nearly as bad as I expected. I thought the 20D was around $2000.

Beautiful looking subjects. Might want to watch the PS; I can see the edits.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback guys, I appreciate it.

maroun.c - I didn't use any flash, just available tank lighting (10K MH w/T5 actinic's I believe). I still haven't worked my way to the FT shots yet but I'll get there. I've processed about 35 of probably 50 shots that I liked.

Ebn - Good eye, I can see one pic where you can see the edit. I'll fix that when I get a few minutes.

awesome pics, i strive to make mine like yours. Got to ask, do you black out the backgrounds in post processing?

clippo
09/27/2007, 02:25 AM
not to be over critical as these ARE great shots but I'd echo Erics observation. The outlines on several of the shots stand out badly - the maroon clown shot is probably the worst for me.... is that shot a composite of 2 or 3 images?

Blazer88
09/27/2007, 07:50 AM
I agree with the clown shot, definitely not my favorite. I was probably getting a little lazy with the edits around that time, lol. It is a single shot though. I should have the shot before the black background and will see if I can dig it up.

Thankfully I always save the original layer in PS for reasons like this. Here is the shot before I got crazy with the black brush. It's easy to to over think an image when editing, I should have left it like this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/rparchen/Fish%20Tank/Ben/IMG_0926.jpg

The red lobo brain is probably just as bad and should have been left as-is like the clown. Sometime it works and sometimes it doesn't though. I like the black background on the second Anthias shot. That wasn't too different from the original, the black just covered a few outlets and made it easier to get rid of the million white specs in the water.

can you explain a little more on your shooting methods? Shutter speed, aperature, shooting mode, etc.

Blazer88
09/27/2007, 08:42 AM
I generally use shutter priority for fish and the shutter speed depends on the focal length of the lense I'm using. My Sigma is 150mm requires a faster shutter speed to offset the camera shake since it's my longest lense. The shot above was with my EF-S 60mm at 1/125, F/4, and ISO 800.

Great pics! do you think the 40d is worth the extra hundred dollars over a 30d?

Blazer88
10/04/2007, 07:12 PM
If I didn't already have the 30D I would probably favor the 40D. But the 30D is a fully capable camera and you can get a used one for probably $500 less than a new 40D, that would leave enough to get a good macro lense. That being said, it's the monkey behind the camera that affects the image most.

I would go with the 40D since I already have thousands invested in Canon glass, it's really more of a preference than anything since I'm used to Canon gear.
