Hello,

Trying to set up a 40g breeder that has been drilled on bottom for quarantine tank. Currently I have a pre fab sump design underneath and 500/g return pump. The problem is the tank was drilled from the bottom middle of the tank and the 3/4 pipe that comes up vertically into the tank creates a strong whirlpool and sucking nose when the system is on. I tried several different elbows and other diversion devices to slow the water flow or at least the noise with no success. Tried adjusting the water level height as well and this till didn’t stop the noise. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this a little quieter?

no it's a drilled tank. There is a 3/4 pvc pipe coming from the bottom of the tank to the top of the water surface. Where you cut this pvc is what regulates the water level. This is where the noise comes from.

Look up a durso standpipe i believe it is. Slowing down the flow to the tank from the sump would quiet it down as well.

try to build an overflow box with teeth cut out of the top of it. then install a durso standpipe, linked to above, inside that box. the lowest point of the teeth will be your new water level and you will get much less noise.
