I have a "new" 180 tall mostly SPS tank. 72 wide, 18 deep, 30 tall.

I want shimmer lines simply for aesthetics. This may seem trivial, but keeping my wife happy with my expensive hobby is a actually a very important thing.

I already have a bank of T5s lighting the tank, but I need more lighting. Would a single 175 or 250, positioned in the center of the tank, produce good shimmer? Or should I go with two, one on each end?

Thanks

I would put a 250 watt 24" from each end of the tank centered. Hope that's what you are looking for.

Definitely go with two. And kudos to you for keeping your wife happy - as a wife, I applaud you :D

Seriously though, it IS important to have your spouse enjoy your hobbies somewhat - you don't want your S.O. to be resentful of the time you spend at a hobby. My hubby, bless his heart, tries to interest me with examples of how realistic his WWII video games are (read: he shoots someone and says "See honey, look how real the blood is, and hear him screaming? Cool, huh?"). I know he's just sharing his hobby, and he's probably also hoping that if I like the game too I won't complain so much about the way his surround sound system makes my apartment walls shake. That's not going to happen until he stops complaining about how bright the MH bulbs are when he's trying to watch a movie ;)

I dont skimmer lines from 250's I only get them from the one 400 on my 30" deep tank. It is a 210 with a 250MH 400MH 250MH in that order. It could be my 400 over powers my 250's?

umm, you mean shimmer lines right timmye? All point source lights will produce shimmer lines. dyoung, I agree with the others that you need two bulbs to make a decent shimmer effect across your whole tank.

Ya, the overpowering might be the reason?? I get shimmer from all mh on my 240 all 5 250 w. I even get shimmer from my wifes 70 w nano tank.

By the way, TIMMYE how much little ripples or waves determins how much shimmer you have also. But, remember that the shimmering is pretty an all, but does reflect the light some back to the bulb. I never really cared about it though. Its pretty.....
