I am in the process of planning my new 500 gallon system and for lighting I ahve 2 1000w MH and 4 250w MH I am wondering what effect the sunlight from the skylights above the area will have on ym corals I keep lps sps soft corals and clams......
the system consists of a standard 180 a 110 tall 2 standard 55s and two 50 gallon sumps.. one 55 is a refugium one is a cryptic sponge tank then the 180 and 110 will be connected over the top with a large "fish highway"

please enlighten me to what efect the sun will have on my system

No ill effect really. Contrary to popular beliefs, sunlight will not cause an algae bloom in your tank, nutrient does.

Coral farms grow their corals under the sun and so does mother nature.

The belief is spread because with inadequate lighting many of the excess nutrients isn't being fully exploited so when you have an influx of sunlight you are going to get algae to exploit it. So people logiclly say its the sun thats causing the issue.

its an open top canopy so all the sunlight hits the water directly I didnt figure it would cause any problems since they have been under 1000w mh anyways
