I was originally planning on doing a reef in my 30gal tank. I've run into many setbacks and I'm wanting to have a fish only tank. I'm just wondering if you need a skimmer for fish only or not? I do have one bu t find it is a pain in the you know what.

Thanks
Sheila

Yes, a skimmer is very important in fish only tanks.

Yes, on the skimmer. Any form of nutient export can only help.

A skimmer will help but is definatly NOT a must. I ran a sw tank for 3yrs without a skimmer and everything was fine.

Also, if you are just doing fish only (no live rock) Is there any type of filter media that is better, or anything to stay away from?

I ran a fish only tank for a year with no skimmer, its definatley not required. I ran it with a bio-wheel filter, and it was all fine. I wouldn't do it again though, instead I would go with deep sand bed, and no live rock. Lots of current research I am reading says that LR is not really required. after all, its a source of filtration, and there is more than one kind of source for filtration. anyweay, a skimmer is a pain, and I wouldn;t use one unless there were sensative corals in the tank

Not meaning to go against the grain, but there is a good chance to meet much more setbacks with the fish, than with moderate light corals.
Experience differs from reefer to reefer, but I sincerely regret being involved with fish - significantly easier with the corals.
The easy way (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1207565&perpage=25&pagenumber=1), natural filtration, illustrated thread.

Just my 2 cents.

See I'm having the opposite. My fish are doing wonderful, but any invertabrates (except crabs) or corals die shortly after being placed in my tank. Plus I find with the intense lighting and live rock, the tank always looks so dirty.

What is needed to keep live rock live? If I take it out of my tank, I know it doesn't really need light but does it need current and heat?
