Can this be done? maybe in a 12 inch false canopy? I will run a small fan inside the fixture, and a large fan clearing the canopy.

Also how can i tell if a used 400W ballast will run this bulb?

IMO it will be too much light for whatever you plan to keep.

The ballast will depend on the bulb.

Check this table for the proper ballast ANSI code depending on the wattage of the bulb and if the bulb is Pulse or Probe start

You will burn you corals. I believe 175W would be plenty for a 30gal. But of course Radium does not make a 175W Save yourself some money and get a lower wattage setup. Spend the money on coral.
