View Full Version : Power head suggestions for a 20

Hello all. I'm not quite a noob with aquariums, but I am when it comes to small-ish ones. I'm planning a small (20 Gal. high) with rock, sand corals and a few fish and inverts. My question is about the power heads that I'd like to place in there. I've been eying the Korila power heads and wanted to know how many I should get and at what GPH. I plan on having only a couple of LPS and the rest will be rics and zoas. I just want a good amount of healthy flow. I appreciate any suggestions to both flow AND a choice of power heads.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone? I'm looking to make a purchase tomorrow.

koralia 1 or 2. for rics/ zoas and some LPS I would get the 2. I have both on my 20L (on either side) and love them.

Thanks for the reply. So you have a 1 and a 2? I want good current but I don't want to it to be too turbulent. I will be placing an order today.

Thanks.

Is there such a thing as too much flow / turbulence? I imagine there is, but not sure how to determine what it is. I'm thinking of adding a koralia nano to my 24g cube (currently running through its initial cycle), which already has a pump that puts out about 260 gph. With that set up, I'd end up with almost 20x the tank's water volume per hour. Would that be too much? We're planning on having 2 or 3 fish (clownfish & ?), and softies/corals that will live under our PC lights. Anyone? (and thanks!)

I ordered (2) Koralia Nanos for my 20 gallon - awaiting their arrival so I do not know yet how these will work out.

i have the same setup you're looking into (20H) i have a koralia 1 on one side and a 2 on the other... the 1's were dissapointing to me, so i traded up and went with one of the 2's. the 2 is a good pump, but i think 2 of them would be a little much for a 20H if you're just doing softies and lps. sps is another story, i might end up putting in another #1 or 2 at the bottom and aim it up...

Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and ordered one 1 and one 2. I'm glad that I saw your post as you have pics and video of the PH in action. My question to you is, does the PH look like an eye-sore in the tank? I am probably going to set one up on either side (left pointing right and right pointing left) in opposing corners to try to create a bit of a swirl or countercurrent in the tank.

Thanks again for the replies.

I think the Koralia pumps are pretty neat looking, but they are kind of big and I can see why some people might consider them an eyesore. I've not seen the Tunze nano stream pumps up close, but they seem a bit smaller than the Koralias (Koraliae?) and I've seen may a post swearing by them.

I have seen those nano PHs but they're a bit out of my price range.

I probably would have suggested two Korallia Nanos.

I keep mushrooms, zoos, trumpets and frogspawn in my 30. They did not like all the flow from the 6025.

I do like my 1 in the 30. Even better than the 6025 it replaced.

I'll probably switch to two Korallia Nanos or a 6055 eventually.

drsfostersandsmith just got the koralia nanos in. i immediately ordered one for my AP 12.

Won't the Koralia Nanos be a little too.... nano... for a 20 gal?

DFS recommended 2 Koralia nanos for my 20 gallon - we shall see how it works out.

Yes, please do. I'm building a 20H nano with my son and we'll be facing the same question pretty soon.

i think the two should work on that. I have a mj900 in my 20 and it does good.

Oh yeah. Too much flow can damage the tissues of the corals and even blow them off there skeleton. Happens with LPS and even with SPS.

That makes sense. So will we have too much flow for zoos and LPS with a maxijet 900 and a koralia nano (24g nano cube)? I think that combination would give us about 20x turnover per hour, give or take a few.

In my 20H I run a Koralia 1 and a mini-jet 606 w/ hydor-flow. They give me really good random flow and all my corals (rics, softies, sps, lps, etc etc) love it
