Yesterday, Iwent out and purchased a golden-head sandsifting goby, so far it has gave me nothing but a headache. It has been spewing it all back over my new electric crocea clam and anything else in its path.

For those of you out there that have them, does the tank eventually clear up from the detirius being stirred? If not, I think I am going to have to return this little guy

It depends on how dirty the sand was to begin with. IMO the detirius is now suspended in the water for your skimmer to get out. I have an orange diamond. The services it provides is invaluable. Also it is my most entertaining fish.

Pmolan, thanks for the reply

Do you remember when you first got it and did you have the same problem?

I did. My sandbed is amost pure white all the time now. The only thing that gets released from the sand is (i think) Hydrogen Sulfide bubbles. Keeps the sand bed from accumulating nasty things.

I had a sifter for about 6 months and while the sand storm does decline and the water gets clearer, he ALWAYS burried my corals and irritated the clam dropping sand on them all day every day. I caught him last weekend and he is being transferred to my friends BB tank soon.

Cute guy and very helpful keeping the sand clean, but he would grab a mouthful of sand, cruise to the top of the water column and swim around sifting. Looked like he was a salt shaker! ;)

I have a two spot goby...he keeps his sand at the bottom of the tank. He works hard for such a little guy...albeight he has gotten bigger in the last two months! I still have stuff floating though that he stirs up.

Ya why are you putting a sand sifter in a bare bottom tank?

OK, just because he's a "sand sifter" doesn't mean he can't live happily in a BB tank. He LOVES prep'd food.

Can anyone answer a question as to whether or not a Golden head (Valenciennea strigata) will get along with a Randall's goby (Amblyeleotris randalli) in a 125 gal?

I would imagine so because the randall's to my knowledge doesn't act like much of a goby. The one I saw in my lfs was swimming around with the other chromis so I would think you wouldn't have a much of a problem there.

I have a Yellow Watchman (paired with pistol shrimp) that always sifts and stays on the bottom. Model Citizen.

The butthead one is a Dragon Goby. HTH

Have seen quite a few sand sifters in barebottoms with good success. If they are eating prepared foods
