My mom is wanting me to make a xmas list and I think I will be needing some new lights. I want to be able to keep sps corals, an anemone, and a clam. My tank is a 90 gallon and it has a canopy. I have 11" from the top of my canopy to the top of my tank and 12" from the top of the canopy to the top of the water. Since this will be a gift I don't think I will ask for the most expensive top of the line light but I do want somthing that will get the job done and last. I currently have a hammer coral and some pulsing xenia growing under 260w of pc bulbs. Any suggestions or any help will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I would suggest 2 x 250w 10,000K or 12,000K MH bulbs over your tank, with reflectors. Bulbs, reflectors and ballasts add up in cost though. If you use IceCap Electronic ballasts, they are each $145. Reflectors with mogul sockets cost $35 each, and then you have the bulbs at $65 each.

Buying lighting used can save you some money though, as long as the ballasts are in good shape and the reflectors are clean. Bulbs tend to last 8 to 12 months, so keep that in mind if you plan to get a used set up.

If you've already got a canopy i would go with Marc's advice and get a retrofit system. Ice Cap ballasts with Hamilton 14K's would by my choice since you wouldn't need to supplement with actinics.
