Hi all. This is an exciting time for me. After procrastinating and saving some $$$ and waiting for items, I am finally starting my build. I have no pictures right now, but felt the need to get this thing started anyway. I've been keeping a 20g high, 3wpg pressurized co2 tank for about a year so this will be my first reef. I also am setting up a 90g sea grass tank as we speak as well. I just have to poly the stand for that and get a filter and that's ready to rumble.

Equipment:

AGA 40g Breeder
Picked up used, practically brand new for 15 bucks. I picked it up in 2006, it has a 2005 build/inspection sticker. The guy wasn't lying when he said barely used. It was used for freshwater as well, so no stains or creep to clean.

Ati Powermodule 4x39w (ordered today yay!)
After waiting since april/may reekgeek called Saturday and i told them I'd have to get back to them today. I opted with Grimreefer's help to go for 1 ati aqublue, 1 ge 6500k, 1 UV 10k aquasun, 1 ati blueplus. You may have noticed my thread in the ligthing/equip section on deciding between 175w and 250w halide, which was the original plan in order to save $$$. But I was persuaded to go with T5, and was about to pull the trigger on the aquatinics fixture when I got the call from reefgeek. Yea, the Ati unit is more money and yea I am kinda on a budget, but I figured I might as well do this right and the powermodule is just plain nasty (after seeing all the sweet tanks on overseas forums I was sold). So that's that. Oh and it will be hung from electrical conduit bent and fastened to the rear of the stand(basically two upside down J's / L's ).

RO/DI Unit(ordered today)
Twopartsolutions econo-75gpd RO kit w/inline TDS meter + BuckeyeFieldSupply dual DI canisters with inline TDS meter. I'd like to call this a poor man's spectrapure maxcap. My reasoning is the maxcap comes with 2x dual TDS inline meters, and I like the convenience so I definitely wanted those. I also wanted 2 DI canisters so I could use one of those Maxcap units in front of a plain refillable mixed bed. The reason I went with the twopartsolution unit was it was cheap at $114+ TDS meter $25 was it came with extras like sink attachments, auto shutoff valve, etc etc. The buckeyesfieldsupply unit was well, one of the cheapest and the meter ends up only costing $16 when bundled with them compared to $25. My total cost with shipping was $238.xx so its about 100 dollars cheaper than the spectrapure (who I called to verify that the maxcap DI would fit a standard housing). The only thing I don't have is a pressure gauge but my dad tested the pressure when installing a 2 stage unit for our fridge and we have an easy 70psi so I didn't really need it.

That's it so far. The stand I will be building out of 2x4's and mdf and will take pictures when I get time to build it.

My plan
My next purchase will be a skimmer, and as right now I strongly feel its going to be a DAS EX-1. I was going to pull the trigger tonight on it but I figured I'd wait and ask what people think.

My original sump situation was going to be 3 10g tanks underneath the stand, where the 2 outside tanks will be elevated and drain into the center tank. One for the fuge, 1 for filter socks +skimmer and one for the return pump. Don't ask why but mostly for the ease of not having to cut and silicone glass for baffles, its cheaper per gallon than larger tanks. Its flexible for future needs. I'd feed both of my drain lines into the one 10g area, one into a sock, the other into the skimmer. The return pump will have a T+ball valve above it and feed the refuge. The outside tanks will drain to the center via 2 bulkhead drains each. Although, if i go with the DAS EX-1, I might not need the 3rd tank and could save room by having one drain dump into the fuge. I may go with way so I can have room for a possible calcium or kalk reactor. Or maybe I should plumb the skimmer outside of the stand altogether?

I know this was long. But I am just so damn excited. I also have 20lb's of liverock in a 20g Brute in the basement w/ heater and MJ900. It's tap water though and after reading today am afraid it may be ruined, as I am unsure of the presence of copper in my tap water. I did use prime of course for chlorine.

AHHHHH.

I bought 1/2 from twopartsolution.com and 1/2 from buckeyefieldsupply.com Twopartsolution has full ro/di kits for sale as well. i just had certain requirements and it was cheaper to kinda piece my own together.

Couldn't resist. Fire in the hole! Purchased the EX-1 earlier tonight after I posted. Will only need a few additional items now and then I will actually be able to cure live rock in the tank if I wanted too aka if the stand was done.

Good night for now.:strooper:

Update

Most of the stuff arrived today. The only thing that did not arrive was the bulk of my RO stuff. I only received the dual DI unit today. The rest from twopartsolution should hopefully be here tomorrow.

Initial thoughts. I opened everything up when I got home from class today around 6pm. The skimmer arrived with pump on which was a concern but it was very well packed in what can be described as a butt load of form fit foam. No damage at all except for a light scrape on the flat black piece on the top of the collection cup. I proceeded to fill the skimmer up in the sink and test her out. To my surprise, it is much louder than I thought it would be. Everyone said the aquabee 2000/1 pumps were suppose to be quiet. I dunno how I am going to sleep at night, and am now wondering if I should have indeed went with the Tunze 9010.

The Ati Powermodule arrived very well packaged as all things reefgeek ships. I opened her up and after unravelling what seemed to be a football field length amount of plastic wrap, I loaded the bulbs and tried it out as well. While installing the bulbs I noticed how amazing the reflectors are. I have a 4x54w tek fixture and the ATI reflectors make the tek reflectors look like aluminium foil. They are mirror shiny. I know that isn't a real scientific comparison but I hope the ati lives up to its name. The fans worked as well with no problems. I am going to be concerned about all the noise(haha now I am concerned) but luckily the lighting is off at night.

Things that did not arrive yet:
-4 stage RO unit
-3 piece diamond hole saw kit(to cut bulkhead holes)

Now I just need to um, start building the stand. Ofcourse, I need to finish the other stand I am already working on first. I also need to get glass cut for horizontal overflow and for sump baffles. I decided to go with a 30g breeder as a sump. I am unsure whether or not I will have a refuge. Still doing a lot of reading on keeping a barebottom tank. And like I said earlier, for all of you who worry I may be missing out on the whole sand thing, I am setting up a 90g seagrass tank with a V-DSB so I shall have the best of both worlds.

To be honest, I am very happy that everything arrived safely. Any questions? Comments? Let me know. I'm new and can use all the help I can get.

Update

The rest of the RO stuff came yesterday along with the diamond hole saws. Everything arrived in good shape. And that's it for now. I gotta get to campus and get some work done before class.

Ok. I decided to say screw it to a few of my original plans. First and foremost, the stand. Some things have come up in the last few days which will not allow me the time or the ability to build a custom stand. Being realistic, I have settled on finding a used stand (36x18). Hopefully I can locate someone's second hand AGA pine stand.
Why the AGA pine stands? Because they are a decent build and will afford me the ability to fit a good sized sump underneath.

Therefore, I am scrapped the 3x10g sump idea. No room to fit them now. I was gonna scrap them for a 30g breeder but again no room. Not to mention they run about 54 dollars. Additionally, I've done a lot more reading on bare bottom tanks and their in's and outs. It occurred to me that a lot of these BB tank keepers are running sumps with no fuge, just a big skimmer, UV, and maybe a phosban reactor with carbon(calcium reactors, kalk stirrers on some as well but is situation based).
I thought to myself that "geeze, I should probably go all out BB if I'm going to go this route" and since I have already purchased a sheet of 1/2inch HDPE I told myself there is no going back. This tank is definitely going BB, which was a hard decision because I think I am going to miss not having sand, fish who need sand, sand CUC, a fuge full of neat stuff to look at, etc. But then I realized I am setting up another tank that will have all of this stuff and I shrugged off any last doubts.

The Sump
I started on the sump today. Its simple, cheap and affective. The only problem is I am gambling on whether or not it will fit under a standard AGA 36x18 stand. If anyone knows if it will, please please let me know.

I bought a 20g long. I had a 15g long at home(24x12x12) but I want to fit as much sump as I can under this thing. So anyways, I ran around today and got 3x 1/4 pieces of glass cut for baffles. The 20L is split 17in vs 13in. The large section will be where the drains dump into and where the skimmer will sit(the skimmer will be fed from one of the drains). inbetween the sections will be the standard 3 pane bubble trap.

Nothing overly exciting. This is my first time working with silicone and am now waiting for the first baffle to cure and then water test. Once I am confident my first ever seams will hold, I'll go a head and install the other 2 baffles and take pictures.
I need to order my return pump. Thinking either a Oceanrunner 2500/3500 or an ehiem offering, the 1250 if I go that route.

Thoughts for next time.
-What Size and brand UV and can I plumb it from a drain?
-Kalk, CA Reactor or 2 part? How do I know which one is for me?
-ATO in a second story bedroom, worth the risks?

Update

Water tested the first baffle I installed. All went well. It held water and the seam ended up being super strong.

Installed the middle baffle tonight. Its a few degrees off of perpendicular. But, I figured for my first attempts at using silicone and the fact that it is indeed a sump that remains unseen from the public, that I will cut myself some slack. On the bright side I felt my seams this time around looked a bit neater. Third times a charm? I just find it difficult to apply the silicone and then somehow manage to wedge the thing into place without making a mess. This baffle, i decided to apply the silicone to the tank and then wedge the thing into place. I think it was less messy all around tonight but I bet the seam from last night is stronger.

Like I said, I'm new at this so outside of what I've read online, I'm just reading the backs of products(ie glass cutters, silicone, etc) and just going for it.

Here is a pick of what I've got going so far.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff247/sayn3ver/SumpConstruction.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

I decided to space the baffles 3 inches apart. I realize this will take up some additional space but I can fit my hand in between to clean and i suppose I could even install a piece of foam/carbon/etc if I ever got desperate. I also plan to run more then the recommended 3-5x turnover through the sump which was another reason I went larger then the recommended 1inch. (Obviously I realize I still may have a micro bubble issue and would then have to reduce the flow of the pump.)

Finished siliconing in the last baffle last night. The sump will probably be water tested later tonight and then should be ready to rock.
