View Full Version : Help me find the "ideal" skimmer

I have a 29 gallon tank with a sump, and I'm trying to decide on the ideal skimmer. I currently have an AquaC Remora skimmer that doesn't seem to pull much out. If you had my tank (with a sump), what skimmer would you choose?

Thanks!

I think that you can use a Remora Hang-On skimmer. Basically is a great skimmer.

Thanks for the reply, but I am wondering if you read the entirety of my message, since I mentioned that I'm not impressed with my Remora. I'd also prefer an in-sump skimmer, since I don't need one that hangs. Any other ideas?

How big is your sump?

I'm not sure about the volume of water that it holds, but it is this skimmer:

Take a look at the EuroReef RS80, it's a good match for your tank.

bad link.

Are you looking for another hang on unit, something that will run in sump, or an external unit? I have an Octopus DNW110 (setup external) that works fine on my 26 gal display with 29gal sump. There are better models out there, but it all depends on how much you wantto spend and what design you are looking for.

If you are DIY capable, you can make a great skimmer for that tank out of some 4" PVC.

The octopus would be a pretty swell choice IMO.

My sump is the Precision Marine Refugium R24. A search for "refugium" on marinedepot.com will return the specs for this sump. For the cleanest appearance, I prefer to keep everything in the sump. I'm looking for something around $200. I've considered the EuroReef RS80, but I want to be sure that this isn't too much skimmer for my 29 gallon tank, even though it's intended for only 80 gallon tanks.

the DNW110 will fit in that sump. the center section of your sump is 11"x13", so you have ebnough room in there for just about any skimmer sized for your system.

I don't think that the RS80 will be too much skimmer...you figure you actually have about 50gal TSV with your sump figured in...and ER (asmost skimmer mfrs do) inflates their ratings. a 5"x20"reaction chamber is fine for a 50 gal system.

Don't worry about manufacturer's specs, most of the time they're overly optimistic. I wouldn't put this skimmer on anything bigger than a 55g tank, so your 29g setup will be just fine. It's really a great skimmer for smaller tanks.
