i'm planning on upgrading my tank to a 60g soon and i would love to add a blue spotted puffer, however, this is going to be a reef tank with hermit crabs and shrimp and everything. i've read some stuff on puffers in general and what i've read hasn't been too promising. i was hoping to get some advice from someone who's had some experience with them to make sure i'm not going to make a mistake or anything. if kept fed well will that make a difference? are the blue spotted puffers maybe not as bad as what i've read about other puffers? thanks so much for the help

^^Drsfostersmith.com says it'll give your inverts a hard time, and with petstores currently asking between $1.50-$3.00 per hermit/snail, that could add up

You're talking about Canthigaster spp.? Any I've had have left hermits and cleaner shrimp alone, but have picked on algae of all kinds, and most corals with the exception of leathers and Xenia.

you also have to watch out for their tank mates also.

Funny, I have a Canthigaster janthinoptera in my reef, and it has never touched any of my mostly soft and lps corals, but I don't have much of a cleanup crew left. I tihnk they're about as hit and miss as dwarf angels.

The upside is if it does start to misbehave I can't think of anything easier to catch.

Puffers evolved to each small things with hard shells. They need to feed on these items to wear their breaks down, much like hamsters chewing on wood. If not their teeth will become overgrown and will require their teeth trimmed or it will starve to death. They are generally a FOWLR type of fish, but some report luck keeping valentine and other Tobey puffers with corals.

Check out thepufferforum.com for more info. There is a dedicated saltwater and saltwater puffer section. I have been keeping one dwarf puffer in my freshwater tank, and not a snail remains. As soon as snails hit the water, my little guy is all over them.
