heres my sump/refug/water changing/equipment holder/frag keeper/filter tank
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00196.jpg

heres my tank already installed, water and sand already added

heres some of the plumbing from DT to SUMP, its not all done but would appreciate any suggestions
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00232.jpg
notice that i installed a valve going into a drain for easier water changes and a float valve to keep topping of the tank
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00231.jpg
and finally this is my tank wich i want to transfer, i want to transfer the sand too, what do you guys think????

Looks great. How high is the tank off the floor? Looks high, but might just be the camera angle. The bow front looks great. Hope the transfer goes well for you.

Take care,

its a little bit more than 4 feet off the ground, i wanted it at eye level for my kids and newphews.

I agree - the tank does look high. That is one thing I'm going to try to do with my next tank. It may be a bit more difficult to work inside of the tank, but viewing the display eye-level will be so much nicer than looking down at it. Are you planning a refugium?

So far, your setup looks great!

sanababit
10/04/2007, 05:06 PM
yup, i have a fuge/sump/filter/fragtank/equipmentholder/waterchanging station/topoff tank going, its one off the pictures above.

I figured it'd be in one of the compartments in your sump. Your setup looks well-planned. I especially like the convenient drain - I must look like a tool in the front yard, pouring my wastewater down the street.

When I moved houses I had to put my sand in a rubermaid container, since i didnt want to move it with the tank. When I put the sand back it took about 24hrs to get back to clear water. I know It might have steered some stuff around, but it was ok, Nobody was hurt.

I would say all new sand too. Your will transfer plenty of your bacteria in the rock work good luck and remember to take it slow.

Instead of purchasing all new sand, why don't you save a cup from your current sandbed, thoroughly clean the rest using ro/di water, and reuse it?

i transfered all the sand and half the water from old tank, looks like everything is still alive and hopefully they will like their new home, and now is the waiting game again, wait for tank to stabilize, wait for coralline algae to grow, go thru hair algae, green algae, cyano, all i can say is bring it on, lol

Hopefully tomorrow i will conect a fan for heat issues and a phosban reactor and a carbon reactor, i will post photos later, thanks for looking

jcpatella
10/08/2007, 07:36 AM
I like the T-5s a lot - don't get me wrong, there's nothing like the shimmer of MHs, but I'm more interested in keeping my power bill and temperatures lower. Also, the bulbs don't need to be replaced as often. I don't have any SPS yet, but from what I've heard, plenty of people say they flourish under T-5. The key is to have enough wattage and the correct spectrum.

jcpatella
10/08/2007, 07:38 AM
To give you a better idea of who is adapting T-5s as their sole source of lighting, check out this month's TOTM - http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-10/totm/index.php.

He keeps his beautiful reef under T-5's only.

one other thing i noticed in my new tank is that the PH does not go above 7.9, i dont want to dose an alk buffer till im sure that it is not a faulty probe, i get an 8.2 ph on my test kits tough.

i will get into some sps and lps in the future and would appreciate any advice on calcium reactors and kalkwasser reactors, so i can control ph better.

I have the same issue with microbubbles (though I've managed to lessen the problem a bit). This weekend, I plan on having my drain water empty into a filter sock to contain the microbubbles that come from that - I'm also going to try to direct the output of my skimmer to the filter sock (for the same reason). I believe this will help.

When I first made my sump, I had a ridiculous amount of microbubbles until I slowed my flow down considerably.

thanks guys, yes i have a terrible case off micro bubbles and i cant stop it, i have 2 1 inch overflows that go down to my sump and fuge (one for each), i put a couple of sponges on the outlet off each overflow and im still getting microbubbles, could it be that its pumping like 6 feet up, the pump is a quiet one 4000 btw, should i just wait for the pipe to slime a little and help with the bubbles???, any ideas??.

i havent removed the legs because if i do i will lose them, lol, jk, thanks for the support guys, i will keep posting new updates.

got some cyano and brown algea going, crabs are taking care of that, got a copperband today and need help on getting him to eat, any ideas???, will post pic later

I have 2 (1 1/4) drain lines, and both of them are going Into a filter sock. I found that having the sock cuts bubbles allmost out. I forgot In your previous post If you had one but thought I would mention It anyways. I would give a little break in time to see If might correct Itself but If Its that severe I would look at another allternative.

Sana – Looks good! If the socks don’t help I noticed, in the photo below, the run of <a href="http://www.modularhose.com" target="_blank">Loc-Line</a> on the return. You may be getting micro bubbles from that. Loc line is leak resistant not leak proof and though it may not be leaking water it may be sucking air in. Best to run submerged.

sana

My AC jr probe always shows 7.9 to 8.0 and the test kit reads 8.2 to 8.4. I have calculated the probe several times with two different base solutions. My researching has found that the test kits usually read high. I have also read high voltage lines effect the probe readings which I have a hard time believing this is the cause since the calibration reading would also be effected. This link (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/june2002/chem.htm) has some good info on PH levels and correction methods. It lists three possible reasons for lower PH. One being you may have higher amounts of CO2. Do you have a gas dryer in the laundry room? Can you feed fresh air from the outside into the room?

sanababit
10/13/2007, 10:07 PM
maybe its a co2 problem, the aquarium is enclosed in a room wich altough its open i doesnt have that much air circulation, could i run a 1/4 line to the outside and hook it up to my skimmer???, dano the dryier is gas but dont know how could that be a problem???

jmait, u said that the locline should me submerged, i tought that thing was leakproof, but reading youre post it looks like its not air proof, so it could be sucking air between the conections, hmmm, im going to have to change those into pvc because i dont want those things submeged into my display, thanks for the idea, will post results later

well guys its been a week and everything is still alive, i transfered everything even the sand, water, fuge, everything, no ammonia btw, thanks for all the help

sana

Dano999
10/13/2007, 10:23 PM
If your burning gas you'll create CO2. It would not take much. I have heard of too many people in a room causing CO2 problems. Try putting a fan to blow out from the room. If it changes the PH at least you'll know without having to run an outside vent line.

IMO I would not worry unless you are getting readings below 7.8. As I mentioned I can't get readings above 8.0. And since most people use test kits that will most likely read in the 8.2 area compared to the probe you're most likely fine.

How are your Alk and Ca readings. If these are within normal levels I would not worry.

sanababit
10/13/2007, 10:31 PM
you are right dano, the ph goes to 7.85 at night and 7.96 during the day, i forgot to add that this is a new tank, i moved evertything from an old tank and it will need time to stabilize, i do get 8.2 ph on my test kits tough, so i will just leave it alone and monitor it for a while, ca is at 460, alk is at 8, im dosing a 2 part, only the alk part to get the alk up to 9 or 10.

Dano999
10/13/2007, 10:45 PM
Your readings are almost exactly what I read for my tank and it's within acceptable ranges.

Alk will climb a little as the Ca stabilizes. I am sure you already know dosing will help raise the Alk but it will most likely stabilize by itself over the next week or so.

I would just enjoy the beautiful creation you made.

It looks awesome.

a little update guys, im still getting a lot of microbubbles from return pump
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00255.jpg
i installed sponges on the outlet end off my overflows, its helping but bubbles keep coming out, should i just wait for pipe to slime up so it takes care off microbubbles.

jcpatella
10/15/2007, 09:14 PM
I installed that filter sock I mentioned a few days ago - it works great for microbubbles. I was able to direct my drain pipe and skimmer into it, which were my two main sources of microbubbles. Originally, I used sponges, but I was able to remove them in place of the filter sock, which will be much easier to remove for cleaning. I don't know if this helps you any, but it's an alternative.

well it looks like the socks are keeping the microbubbles at bay, its been 3 days and the socks are really dirty, how often in your experience to change the filter socks.

sana

jcpatella
10/21/2007, 01:33 PM
I've only used one for two weeks now. I find myself changing it every three or four days. I have a small bioload right now, though.

Some people buy four or five socks and when they're all dirty, throw them all in the wash with a little bleach. I haven't done this, as I only have one sock and it wouldn't be too practical!

MR PALM BEACH
10/21/2007, 02:30 PM
I found that machine washing them does something to the material allmost seems like It tightens It up more If that makes sense. I washed It In the machine one time and It only took 2 days till the sock was filled up again. Now I just jet It out with the garden hose Inside and out and then dry It In the sun for day and that seems to give me another week and half use out of It.

sanababit
10/21/2007, 11:21 PM
so are you telling me that when they stop working they overflow??, ohh crap, i got the socks installed above the tank which if they clog up they will spill water into the floor, i will have to submerge them, one other thing i noticed is that the flow is reaaaallllyy slooooowwww, meaning no turbulence in the water, and the top layer of water in sump and fuge are stagnate and are getting a thin layer of cyano.

sana

jcpatella
10/21/2007, 11:57 PM
This probably doesn't help much now, but your baffles are up/down/up. Which means your flow goes under/over/under. It might help if they were reversed. The baffles should be down/up/down so the flow goes over/under/over. That really helps eliminate the stagnant surface film.

Also, the first baffle, which should be to the floor of the tank, keeps substrate in the compartment. You have a thin layer of substrate in your sump, but if it were any higher, it'd probably block the flow through the baffles.

sanababit
10/22/2007, 10:44 AM
i know, i got it backwards, i noticed the problem that i put the baffles in the worng way, i will have to do some water agitation, man this thing is driving me crazy, move here, put there, cut it, lower it, it doesn't matter how i do it, theres always a better way.

sana

jcpatella
10/22/2007, 01:08 PM
I have a suggestion. Why don't you just remove that first baffle - the one holding in the stagnant surface? Then your flow would be over/under. Just an idea.

Hello again, here's a little update on the progress of my tank, i changed my lights from power compacts to t5 ho and had yet another cyano outbreak, this one was feroucious, i did not matter what i did, it did not want to go away, i have phosban, carbon, denitrifier going, fed less, changed water; finally after shutting the light for 3 days it seems to have died off, i've adden some sps adn seem to be doing fine, but i would like to identify them, here are the photos

i noticed this too, on one of my clowns theres a white spot on one of his fins, i have noticed this to on other parts of body, they appear all of the sudden and then fall off, i always tought it was from her getting bigger, maybe shedding scales, here are some photos

As usual, everything looks very nice. You add the nicest looking corals! All my LFS around here are empty right now - I get jealous when I see what you pick up!

About the clown - Ours had the same thing when we brought him home a few months back. It got worse, but after a week or two it started to disappear. Now, he's perfect and it hasn't returned. We never did figure out what it was though - some kind of fungus.

thanks for the comments guys.

jc, i think is someking of fungus too, it appears only at the ends of her fins and then fall off, i tought it was from them getting bigger, you know shedding some scales, she acts funny sometimes, she swims like crazy and takes big gulps of sand and then spits them, like if she is trying to scrape something inside her mouth, this has been going on for 2 months now, but she seems to eat, swim, interact normally.

Are you interested in Cleaner Shrimps (a.k.a. skunk cleaner shrimp)? They are an interesting addition to the reef aquarium, plus they get their kicks cleaning fish when they're not busy looking around for scraps. I LOVE mine and I plan on getting another one. He loves to check out any new inhabitants and occasionally hop on the ones who allow him to clean them. He even sticks his 'arms' into fishs' mouths to clean them. It isn't THE solution to your problem, but it may help.

Hello, your tank looks great. I was wondering where you got the plans for your denitrator and is it still working well?

sanababit
01/06/2008, 04:05 PM
hello robin, yes it is still working got my nitrates down to 0 or close to it per my test kit, the plans to make one are easy, but depends on the size of your tank, readig your stats it says you have a 75 gal, you will need a phosban reactor, no-no3 media made by carib-sea (goggle it) easy to find and cheap, an mj1200 or 800 pump, 1/4" tubing and 1/4 tubing ball valve.

fill your reactor with the media from one sponge to the next, hook up the tubing to the inlet and outlet of reactor, you will need fittings for this, you can use 2 1/4"mnptx1/4" tubing jaco fitting, use clamps to hold them to the outlet and inlet, hook your mj pump to the inlet of the reactor and put pump in your sump, and start it up, for the first 7 days go a drop a second on the outlet, send it to a bucket if you can, check the outflow for nitrate and nitrite, after 7 days you will see its magic, then you can up the flow too 2 drops a second or 3, just be very carefull, if its running and it smells like rotten egg, disconect it and clean the reactor and start again, if everything goes right this thing will not need service for at least 18 months or so, any questions let me know

havent done a water change in 3 weeks, and i make my own sea water every month, i run phosban, carbon and denitrifier to help with algae and to control nitrate, they make it easier on maintenance

Hello guys, i havent post anything in a month so here i am again, i got a couple of pictures of my tank, which is covered with coralline, if you notice that the top rim doesnt have algae, the reason is that i had to drain some water out of tank to catch a flame angel that was picking at my corals, it was driving me crazy, freaking fish is a smart little bastard, but i am smarter, lol, anyways all the algae was exposeed to air for a little while and it turned white and peeled off

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00321.jpg

I am happy to post that i have been nitrate free for about 2 months since i installed the denitifier, all cyano is GONE, finally after about 2 months trying to get rid of it, i wish a had a picture but it was so ugly that i did not want to even see it, lol

I got these toys today
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00330.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00326.jpg

I will install them tomorrow since i havent had time to do it, i will post pictures once i have them in the tank, i hope i like them since these toys were expensive.

I dont have much experience with blue-green chromis but i put 8 this weekend and theres only 2 left, i think the two left killed the other 6, man this bummes me out since i have to get some more, anyone have experience with them??? is it normal for them to dissapear???

Well guys nice to share this with you and ill see you soon

02/07/2008, 05:02 PM
hey puf, regular phosban reactor, i filled it with no-n03 media from carib-sea, man it works great, i have had no problems with it since i installed it about ~3 months ago

I'M BACK, lol, hello fellow hobbiests, i got a couple of updates on tank and here they are, i installed a coupke of ecotech vortech pumps, they where expensive but well worth the price, my only problem is that since i have sand, the pumps just kick it aroud and creates a dust storm every so often, but other than that everything is ok, heres a photo

Anyone out there have a T5 HO fixture from current, i have the 8 bulb version but i think there is not enough light going into tank, even tough its 8 bulbs, i am going to sell this and buy an ice cap 660, 4 bulb retro kit, 4 reflectors, 2 ati blue and 2 ati reef blue bulbs, hopefully i will get more light with this and my corals start growing.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z196/sanababit/DSC00345.jpg

well any comments on fixture are really appreciated, any mods on them???, could i get individual reflector for this kind of fixture???.

thanks for looking

Forgive me i'm new here but may i ask how your skimmer is plumbed? It looks like is just sitting on the floor like a canister filter. Is this so? I have been trying to figure out how I can set a skimmer up similarly to how a can. is set up. No sump just water to the skimmer in the tank stand and then back up to the tank. Just like a fluval. Sound possible?

sanababit
03/03/2008, 10:09 PM
adam, its a recirculating skimmer, its beign feed from one of my overflows coming from tank, the skimmer then sends the water to a sump and from the sump its beign pumped up to main tank.

the way you described it can be done but skimmer has to be higher than main tank, you can pump water from main tank into a recirculating skimmer and the outflow from skimmer send it back to main tank.
