9010 maintenance question

I have my DOC 9010 setup inside my sump and love it. My question is this how often should I clean the sponge on the outlet pipe? I have had it setup for a little over a month and its pretty dirty. Also what is the best method of cleaning it?

Just ring it out in fresh water. I would generally clean it monthly.

Remove the sponge from the pipe? Or disconnect the pipe and do it that way?

I own the 9010 and just pull the sponge off the tube and ring it out a few times under water when it gets dirty. No real scientific way to do it, just clean it :)
