View Full Version : attaching clams in barebottom tanks?

How do I keep clams upright on the tank bottom?

I've tried using a cup-shaped rock as a cradle, but the clam inevitably detaches at some point. Other ideas?

What type of clam? If its a crocea, then a cradle-type rock should do nicely. Most any other will really want some kind of fine substrate. You may want to get a container of some sort (think shallow tupperware) and fill it with sand, then place the clam in there. Otherwise, BB tanks simply dont provide the necessary environment for Tridacna clams.

I've been using 1/2" rings cut from 2" PVC. They cover in coralline very quickly. The byssal threads can still attach to the glass, so they create a firm foundation.

Is it possible to keep wrasses in a BB tank? I plan on putting 20# in a 180g just for my goby to play with, but would like to add a wrasse or two. Any ideas?

I have not tried this but I have heard that you can put super glue on the bottom mental and place it where you want it and it will stay in that spot. Like I said I have not tried it though.

Maybe a 5" or so acrylic disk with live rock rubble glued to it?

haha.. that's cute..

I've got a Deresa resting fine on my starboard bottom, a 2 croceas sitting on flat rocks on the bottom (which could do fine without the rock, but it lets me move them)

I have had the deresa sitting on the bare bottom for 2 years...

edit to add:

Here is a pic of it when I first got it 2 years ago (center of tank): http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/40-fulltank.jpg

Here it was a couple months ago (left side): http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/a11-full-tank.jpg

No don't do this.:eek1: Super glue and clams don't go together.

I know, funny right? Imagine someone trying to provide a natural habitat. What was I thinking?

And no- please dont super glue it down- lol. Clams do actually move a small mount; Id be worried about the glue interfering with them opening/closing too.

That's not what you were implying however. You were implying that non-croceas would die in BB tanks.

I actually posted real experience showing the opposite to your claim; that BB tanks CAN offer an environment suitable for thriving Deresa clams.

Awesome growth on the clams... looks like they have quadrupled in size!

Shell as a main holder, then place it whatever you like. I used cradle rock, until population of bristle worms exploded. Had to use shell.

Recently bought 2 sticks aquarium epoxy putty of coraline color, instruction has description, how tailor the personal fitting place for the clam, safe from bristle worms. Didn't tried - my tridacnas are already attached.
