Significance of Pin Spacer?

What is the significance or import of the pin spacer? I know it keeps the magnets a set distance apart, but why is that so important?

The pump is designed for a constant loading upon the bearings. If you use the pump on a thinner aquarium than what it was designed for without offsetting the gap between the two halves, the additional clamping load will result in the pump drawing more power, running hotter, and potentially breaking components that were not designed to handle the extra load.
