Can I keep a clam on a ledge close to the water surface with only pc lighting or does it have to have metal halide?

Thanks in advance!

I've heard some people having success doing that (not sure for how long).
But if you want to ensure the health of that clam, MH are the way to go.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

Clams need lots of lighting, especially crocea and maxima clams. PC lighting is just too weak IMO for clams, even close up. Some people claim to have success with PC lighting, but I'm thinking they define success as not having the clams die on them. They may live, but they certainly wont thrive in such light. T5 or metal halide is the way to go if you want to keep them.

On a side note, right near the surface of the water is not necessarily where the greatest intensity light is. In the case of fluorescent lighting, the fact that the light source is so spread out means that there is a point where going closer to the bulbs actually decreases the intensity (light from the other bulbs or parts from the bulb begin to be blocked).

Derasa and Squamosas will do fine under most PC lighting. How much are we talking about?
