How many watts can a 20 amp line safely handle? Both my reef and my plant tank are running of the same circuit. I recently purchased a 12 outlet strip rated at 1875 watts with the idea that I would organize the maze of wires to make things more "safe". The outlet strip has a 15 amp circuit breaker built in. It is plugged into my 20 amp line. I plugged all my lights. filters, pumps, heaters into the outlet strip and presto-- out came a flame from the 15 amp breaker. It burned up. Shouldn,t it have tripped. Maybe for peace of mind I should hire an electrician.

Amps = Watts/voltage. If your house is running at 120 volt you can run 2400 watts maximum on a 20 amp. circuit. They (electricians) do recommend that you only run 80% of the max amps on a circuit (1920 watts)
