why do anemones like to find powerheads & get sucked in?

Just curious as to why this is. Read a lot about it but no one said why they do this?

Suicide?? But really most of the time when they release their foot they are at the mercy of the tank flow, since water is being sucked into the powerhead they have no way of getting away from the current of the intake

They are looking for a suitable location, it isn't that they like to get sucked in. They like a good amount of flow and it usually leads them to a powerhead.

With poor lighting or water, they will move.

with perfect water and perfect lighting they will move.


It is law, in my book .... anything that can move, will move.

Ahhhhhhhhh ok just wondering cus in lots of forums I've read about this & was just curious. So how does one avoid something like this?

I have had 3# of them, none ever moved!

I avoid the problem by putting foam covers over all the powerheads in the tank with anemones. Mine haven't moved, but the first one did split. The new one moved right onto the foam cover of a powerhead. Sigh.

Just kidding. Anemone are inherently never happy, if you look at some of the members here with the massive tanks, most of them don't house anemones because they move to much and take a chance of stinging corals.

I'm pretty sure they water quality are pristine along with their gazillion dollar lighting systems..

I have small tanks with pc lighting! One died during a power outage. one died from a tank liking. one still going strong!

In many cases they are draw to the flow in hopes of a good meal passing by. As Jonathan says, a foam or nylon cover keeps them from becoming clam chowder.

What kind of covers? Never seen one.

I just use the hollow cylindrical tubes used for undergravel prefilters, and cut to size. A small chunk of aquarium floss plugs the hole. That way, the anemone can cause the pump to freeze up, but not get damaged in the process. :( :)
