Picked up the tank from Jesse last week and have been busting my butt trying to finish up the work on my DIY stand. It's pretty much complete. All I have to do is paint the inside and I'm done. Here are a few pics..........don't mind the wires hanging off the wall :p.

Awesome stand that goes perfect with the Elos. That corner of your house is perfect for a Elos too. Only change I would make is to move the picture of the woman (your wife??) closer to the tank. You'll get big time brownie points if you do that! She looks so lost in that corner. :-)

Thanks for the kind words everyone :D!

The room in the pic is my downstairs family room. It's still pretty empty with the exception of the couch you see. I think I'm going to put the setup against the brown wall, but there are a couple of other spots I can put it. An inlay media center and plasma will go where the tank is sitting now so it will have to move. Yes, that is a picture of my wife...........brownie points with the wife is always good :p!

My original plan was to purchase a Giesemann Infiniti but after talking to a few owners I decided not to go that route. I picked up a 24" Maristar 250 DE/ T5 combo unit from kinetic instead. It's a sweet looking unit. It looks much better in person then it does in pics. Kinetic just save me $750!

It wasn't too difficult to build. All you need is very basic wood working skills. I'm just glad I still have all my fingers after cutting all that plywood. A couple of RC members on gave me some really good info in the DIY forum on how to put it together.

I just purchased the tank for Jesse. I didn't need the skimmer but I am considering purchasing the sump from him. I'm feeling a bit lazy to put one together.

Maximus........the thing that deterred me the most from making the Giesemann purchase was what I heard about the customer service. A local LFS had a couple of 48" units that went bad on them and the US distributor is not standing behind the product saying it was user error (that's what I was told). I'm not saying it's a bad product but if something were to go wrong then it would be a real pain to get it repaired or replaced since the US distributor is located in Canada. That just made me a little uncomfortable.

Very impressive!! I wouldn't dream of putting a DIY stand under an Elos, until I saw yours. I thought it was made by Elos until I re-read your OP.

Great work. I really like where you've placed your junction box for the wiring too.

This is one of those threads I'll use to convince my wife that I need an upgrade. :)

Thanks! I have no concerns with the legs. They support up to 600lbs each according to the specs. The legs have a wide steel base that the stand sits on........it's just not visible. I made sure to mount them directly under the side/vertical pieces of the plywood so it will transfer all the weight to the floor plus I doubled up the top and bottom of the stand for extra support.

Great looking stand, Nanoguy. I will be building my stand very soon and will likely design something very similar to yours. Is that a matte black finish? Did you pot a polyurethane over it? Any details on the finish would be great. Very inspiring. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Soli......the stand is finished in a mocha brown stain and finished off with a satin clear poly. The pictures are not all that great that is why it may appear to be matte black. The staining process is pretty simple and fool proof. Just sand the ply along the grain with 220 grit sand paper prior to applying the stain. Make sure you don't sand too much or you'll thin the veneer and it will not take the stain well. After sanding, make sure it is dust free and start applying a good amount of stain, wait a couple of minutes and then wipe off the excess. You may want to apply a wood conditioner prior to staining so you don't get uneven/blotchy spots. Use oil based stains and clear coat.....they will not raise the grain like water based products. I used a spray on poly......the ones you buy in a can. A lot of people say you can't get good results with a spray can but I would have to disagree. The key is to apply very thin even mist coats. DO NOT STOP MIDWAY during your spraying. You will get wet spots if you do. Make one continous spray pattern across your stand and release the nozzle button only when you have completely passed the end of the project. By the way, spray the edges first. I did a total of 7 thin coats. Don't worry if you don't cover the project in one pass. You'll get the rest with the following coats. After I built up a decent layer of poly, I sanded it down with 220 grit sand paper. This sanding step requires very little pressure on the sanding paper.....it's more like wiping then sanding. Wipe off the dust and spray your final coats. If you decide to use a "brush on poly" then you will have to sand between every coat but only 3 coats is needed as the brush on stuff goes on a lot thicker.

I finally got to installing the lighting fixture. It's a 24" Maristar 250 DE/T5 combo. Here are a couple of updated pics.

So here is my sump.....well....a prototype. I had a hard time visualizing the design on paper so I just made one out of card board. The sump measures 20"x20"x14". The top right will be my drain/skimmer compartment. The water will flow pass the 3 baffles into the refugium on the left and empty into the return compartment (bottom right). I picked up a sheet of transparent bronze/black acrylic for the project and will start working on the "real deal" sometime Sunday......I hope. I made sure to leave enough room inside the stand for a calcium reactor setup. I will have to go with a Korallin C1502 since it has the smallest "reactor" footprint that I could find. The tank should be up and running by next weekend.

thats a good idea, building it out of cardboard first. I always end up improvising in the middle of building my sumps and running my plumbing because something I had in mind just doesn't work.

nanoguy
10/21/2007, 03:51 AM
Thanks fisheebill. I hope the sump build turns out well. I'm a little concerned about micro bubbles entering back into the tank. This seems to be one of the biggest problems on sumps with a small footprint. I decided to add a small refugium between the skimmer and return compartment hoping that it will eliminate a majority of the bubbles before it reaches the return pump. In theory, it seems like it should work well.....we'll just have to see once I get it up and running. Hell, as long as the sump doesn't leak or falls apart it's all good.

Wargod........the Sfiligoi was one of my lighting choices along with the Giesemann Infiniti. I purchased the Maristar used from Kinetic. The unit is in practically new condition and it also came with a barely used IceCap ballast so I had to move on the deal. Picking up this unit saved me a very nice chunk of pocket change which was a strong motivator for the purchase :D. The black powder coating on the Maristar is pretty sweet.........very stealthy looking. I've read that the Sfili fixtures were having problems with their ballasts so all the new units are now equipped with an IceCap ballast.

Wassap Paul! Hey, I thought you were out of the hobby? Can't stay away from the boards I see. You don't need any help with building a stand as you are quite capable of building one yourself. Anytime you're in town just give me a call. Maybe now I can get that bright red yuma you gave me to color back up in the new system :D!

I finally got the tank up and running. Don't mind the bleached Fiji rocks. I had a 150 lbs of this stuff from my old setup sitting in a contatiner of salt water for the past year with only a powerhead running in there. Hopefully, the coraline will start to take off within a couple of months. Everything seems to be going well with the setup. The DIY stand and sump didn't collapse......a good thing. I did run into a humidity issue inside the stand but it should be an easy fix. Here are some updated pics.

For corals, I'm going to go mostly sps, some zoa's, and rics. I'm not sure about the fish stock. The sand I'm using is "Arag-alive"...the stuff that comes wet in the bag. I really like the grain size plus it doesn't cloud up the tank too bad. I purchased 40 lbs (2 bags) for the tank.

The tank temp stays pretty constant at 80 degrees. The heater is on a controller. I'm going to setup a Kalk reactor for my top off, but for now I'm doing it the old school way......manually. I am topping off almost 1.5 gallons every 24 hours........quite a bit of evap since I'm not even running my lights for that long.

Thanks! I was just messing around with the video option on my digital camera and figured I'd upload it just for kicks. I'm still waiting for my system to stabalize a bit before I put more live stock in there......hopefully within the next couple of months. I'm surprised you came across this vid.......I can't even find it on Youtube. The EuroReef RS80 does a pretty good job at skimming the tank. Here's a small colony of acan lords. I got a frag of this from terra ferma a few years ago. This was one of the first batches of acan lords that was brought into the US.
http://home.pacbell.net/deejay27//december/acanlords.jpg[br][br]

Here's a pic a pink ricordia. I had this guy for a couple of years and it was originally blood red when turtlespd gave him to me. I had to put it in my nanocube and that's when it lost all its color and turned orange on me. It's starting to come back since it's been in the Elos setup. It's hard to tell from the pic but it is actually pinkish red in coloration. Hopefully I can get it back to its original color.

I placed the vortech on the side of the tank. I get a pretty nice wave action with it set on pulse mode at 65%-70% with 2 second intervals. I will post a vid of it in action as soon as I get it back from MarineDepot. I sent it back for them to test because I had some issues with it. By the way, I answered your stand question on the diy thread.

The total height of the stand from the legs to the top tier is just a tad under 38". So with the tank the total height is roughly 58". I'm 5'11" tall so the setup height works well for me. I can comfortably view it from the front and the top without either being too low or too tall.

Thanks.......I will look into that mesh mod. As long as it doesn't require me to tear or cut apart my needle wheel I'll give it a try.

CamBarr.........not too much has happened since my last post with the exception of my Vortech addition. I will try to get a vid of it up and running by the end of this week. I'm picking up a leng sy frag from a fellow reefer tomorrow. I'm Still trying to score some nice pieces from local hobbyists but I'm finding that task a bit difficult.

The total height of the stand from the legs to the top tier is just a tad under 38". So with the tank the total height is roughly 58". I'm 5'11" tall so the setup height works well for me. I can comfortably view it from the front and the top without either being too low or too tall.

There's not too much to see since the room is still fairly empty. I get some pics on the next update which is coming soon.

Radar1.........there is 2 t5's in the unit but wish it had four. I was thinking of putting together a hang-over canopy so I can load it up with more t5's.

Radar.........take a look at this. A bit more expensive then the infiniti unit. The sfiligoi comes with IceCap ballasts and I believe a better reflector.

Here are a few updated pics of my setup. I changed out my sump with a much larger one and plumbed it in my garage. It's a 50 gallon DIY sump with about 35-40 gal operating volume. I also built a hanging canopy to match my stand and installed a 400 watt radium on a Lumenarc electronic ballast with 4 t5's to replace my 250 watt hqi fixture.

Here are some recent pics of a portion of the livestock I took a couple of months back. All pics were taken with a Nikon D60 (55mm-200mm lens) with white balance set. I don't know why some of the corals outside of the center focus came out glowing but the main focus image is a pretty good representation of the true colors of the corals......at least on my monitor. No color adjusting done.....just resized the image. I'll try to get a updated full tank shot this weekend.

E-bill difference? Coral color/growth?

would you have any drawing laying about regarding your floating canopy? Ive been in the process of designing one, but Im not a carpenter and dont want to waste coral funds with trial and error :D
