well, I just feel sick, this was one of my favorite frags. i have had it for about 3 months, and it had encrusted very nicely and grown about an inch.. 2 nights ago, I discovered that my hydraphora had fallen on it, I quickly separated the two but it was too late, keep in mind that the hydraphora landed on the side of this frag that you can not see. this is 36 hours later :(

I too see the red bugs. I wouldn't worry so much about the frag, deal with the red bugs!

well if they are rb, then it is real early, i have great PE everywhere.. and don't see them anywhere else.. how to treat early infestations?

Chad Vossen
10/11/2007, 01:27 PM
the same way you treat heavy infestations.

acrodave
10/11/2007, 01:28 PM
PE is not allways a sign of heath. What u need is some Interceptor that will kill them. But you will need to sweet talk your vet out of some first.

I have a hydnophora that fell right between two frags, a teal acro of some sort and a purple millepora. It took out half of each, and wasn't on there that long. Badass stingers. Fortunately I've never seen it put out sweepers while upright, although I've heard that they can.

Those are indeed red bugs dude...You better find some interceptor

Download the articles on Red Bugs (T. acroporanus) from Eric Borneman and melsreef and take them to your (local) vet. They should be suprised by the paper's quality and give/sell you a few Intercetor tablets.

five.five-six
10/11/2007, 02:12 PM
well I am glad we caught it before I gave it to someone else.. do you have a link to that artical??

IIRC, I need to get all my shrimp and hermits, are clams ok? then treat twice, 2 weeks apart,

acrodave

only the dragon face ones eat red bugs. And im sure that they are not all that good at getting all of them.I have tried and the pipe died before i saw a difference

I would treat with Interceptor the red bugs can live in the water column you should read up on the treatment.

Nice pics 5.5-6

getting a pipefish to get rid of your redbugs is like getting a six line to get rid of your bristleworms. Aint gonna happen

acrodave

Well look at it as fate if the hydraphora had not fell on your acro you would have never posted a pic. And its a good thing you did the red bug is a horrible little critter that will make your reefing hell. So i hope you can find a vet that will let you score some Interceptor. So you can get back to the path of happy reefing.

absolutely, I have looked at my other acros, and recent magnified pics and see not red bugs. I hypothesize that the dying tissue on this frag has attracted them, increasing the density so that they were diagnosed before a infestation

When I had red bugs they were concentrated on a single healty coral. I would suspect they were there before the incident.

Thats a SEVERE case of the RB's. They ARE elsewhere in your system for sure! Time to interceptor that tank! I bet the wife is going to tell you "i told you so!"

And its a good thing you did the red bug is a horrible little critter that will make your reefing hell.

But isn't it true that lots of reefers choose not to treat for red bugs and their corals show no ill effects? I know of two, both with beautiful tanks and healthy looking corals, and both had red bugs for years....

I just found out that I have them too and I'm thinking about whether I have to treat the tank or just add pipefish to control the population.

Anyway, from what I've heard and read, "...if you have to have a pest in your tank, red bugs are the ones that you want."

take lots and lots of pics and throw most of them away :)

I am pretty new at this, so I can tell you that point and shoot are easyer to focus because they have a smaller CCD, so you get a bigger field of focus,

the camera has to be perfectly still

get to know your camera, do the manual focus

clean the glass b-4 you shoot even if it looks clean

keep the lens perpendicular to the glass

I got a macro lens set on ebay for ~$30, which helps a bit

get to know your camera

stop all your flow in the tank fro really nice pics

here are a few of my favorite tank pics (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1218606)

I think that the hydraphora was just trying to attack the red bugs and save you some trouble :p

Good luck getting rid of them. Keep us posted on how it turns out.

ok here is after the first treatment on Friday night, as prescribed. I went a little over the recommended .25 grams / 10 gal I used 2.8 grams for ~ 110 gal and I could not do the ware change for 20 hours. there is no sign of any living hermits that got left behind I only got about 20 out. the 1 fire shrimp that I could not get out has survived. looks like the treatment worked and my lil frag has been busy building skeleton

http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/9763/img0526mu5.jpg

and a little closer

http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/8137/img0527kd4.jpg

I am going to complete the regiment with two more treatments

just fallow the instructions, the tough part is getting a scale. if you know a gun nut.... er firearms enthusiast who loads they're own ammo, they will have a scale accurate enough to do the trick

just a quick question...I was under the impression that RB's generally only attack smooth skin acros, like deep waters....granulosa, lokane, that kind....am i wrong/misguided?

amcarrig
11/03/2007, 01:08 PM
Right, RB only attack smooth skinned acros so your millipora and similar corals are safe. Of all of the sps pests in this hobby, I have found redbugs to be the easiest to get rid of. After going 4 months without, I just now added two "test" montis to my tank after losing a battle with monti eating nudibranchs.

i have heard that the Hydraphora has the strongest sting of the corals....and i have heard tales also of it actively seeking neighbouring corals to sting and kill them with noodle like sweepers of excessive length...

i have found also that my GSP to be quite powerfull as well...my green cap fell into it and was smoked...went from a 1.5" frag of 50+polyps on it to 8 or so polyps and no green left to it.....

good job on the red bugs...i am glad to have seen your macros, and now know what to look for,,

five.five-six
11/03/2007, 10:15 PM
well it is the most powerful stinger that we normally keep, I am sure that in the wild, there are nastier ones. good info on the GSP, I knew about GSP chemical warfare (you must run carbon) but the sting is new to me
