Hello,

I am thinking about getting a blue spot gobie but not sure if he will do o.k. in a BareBottom Tank? Do they have to have a sandbed?

Thanks

So. I really thought this fish was too good to pass up so I got him for my son's 29G tank. His tank has a sand bed and the fish has not burrowed once and has not done any sand sifting. I thought they needed a sand bed to be happy but it doesn't look that way.

Here's a pic of him in his new home...

Type of watchman it seems. They enjoy a lot of rockwork to hide in and rarely do sand sifting. He looks like he's got the "frown face", which is what gives me that idea. Personally I have a yellow watchman, he hides all day in his little corner and once in a blue moon takes a bite out of sand. Now my Diamond Goby, he's off sifting away all day and night long. I go to bed and when I wake up he's done something crazy. Poor watchman doesn't like him though, always showing him his mouth.

There are sandsifter gobies, which have to have sand in the tank. This doesn't look like one though. Generally a sand sifter will be sifting sand. It's what they do, and how they survive. If you wanted a watchman in your BB just give him lots of places to hide. I couldn't find much info on a "blue spot" by name, but you can see some of the sandsifter ones on liveaquaria, under gobies, sandsifters. Check it out and you'd know some to avoid for that tank. Otherwise, start looking up on whichever you really want and see what you find out.

This is an issue of misidentification. You have a type of watchman goby, acentrogobious leptocephalus I believe. I think blue spot threw people off leading them to think you meant a blue spot jawfish, opistognathus rosenblatti. The jawfish really needs sand, whereas the goby just needs some rockwork and doesnt usually burrow. Its best to try and use the common as well as latin name when asking about fish, especially gobies, since blennies, gobies, dragonettes and jawfish all have similar body shapes and are often grouped together as gobies in conversation. Not to mention every animal has a number of common names. Just my opinion.
