okay so this weekend i went to baltimore maryland while my dad was runnig in a marathon. i checked the parameters, and all looked perfect. everythign was zero, except nitrates-5 which is normal. my cousin fed the fish andand they look perfect. so i get hoem to find diatom all over the sand, nitirtes are at like off the charts (AHHHH) nitrates are at liek 20-30 and ammonia is like 3. WHAT THE HECK DO I DO! i already did a 20 water change. and the number pretyy much stayed the same. my tank is 10 gallons, with a penguin 350 filter with a fuge i nthe one compartment and chemi pure in the other. PLEASE HELP!!!

over feeding most likely or something died\
YOU PUT A FUGE IN ONE OF THE COMPARTMENTS???

yea i have cheato and a light. is that bad??????? and a hermit croub was foudn dead this morning. i know nitrites are bad. what shoudl i do abotu this. how do i get rid of it?

its not bad its just not heard of...the bio wheel filtration isnt really made for reefs...you should go bigger...IMO
water changes do like 2.5 gallons every week

okay. at this point since my nitrates and nitrites are way up, what should i do? let it go? or do more water changes?

If you don't have any corals in there, there is no need to panic too much. A few water changes over the next few days will bring the nitrates down.
I would say you need to train your cousin on how much to feed, it sounds like he put way too much in the tank.

well the problem is i have corals in there.....
frogspawn (looks a little small hasnt opened fully past two days) zoos-look perfect
gorgonian-fine no polyps emerged today though
mushrooms-look deecent

to me it sounds like a mini cycle

change 2 gallon of water every other day til the parameters go down

What ever your cousin did caused a mini cycle to happen from overfeading. This overloaded the bio-fiters capacity to nitrify. Next time you go out of town hire a professional maintenance company to take care of your tank. Just keep doing water changes to bring things back to normal.

okay thanks guys. did another 2 gallon change today. tested an hour after-everythings the same...AHHH! plus my one head on my frogspawn is barely even peeking out. other 6 are looking good. ill keep doing changes. should i be feeding normal?
