I plan on setting up a 90g mixed reef tank. I have a combination of 3 tanks now, mixed reef, about 90g total, that I have never used any filters before. Totally relying on live rock, a deep sand bed, and skimmer. 4 years now.

I have had problems with red algae for the last year or so that I can't get ride of

In my new setup I want to get off to the best start possible. I'm thinking about adding some type of filter system.

Let me hear your suggestions to make my new setup red alge free.

a good skimmer is your best filter...
some algae eating critters and propperly Cured liverock to keep out algae in the first place, then keep you nutrients low so that the algae has no food.

also a Refugium with some cheato macroalgae growing can compete well with algae in the display.

also as a DSB gets older it has more and more nutrients

try a SSB in the system that can be removed and replaced when it gets dirty. and if you really want to get rid of algae look into a Remote Deep sand bed .

just some suggestions on how to compete with algae growth
