Hook Island

Just came back from a week diving, snorkeling and fishing around the Whitsunday's. I usually go out in my boat with the guys but decided it was time i took the family out to see what it was all about. We spent most of our time moored around the top of Hook Island at Luncheon Bay but also did a trip down to Whitehaven to let everyone see what it was all about. I took some photos with my trusty Olympus digital camera and thought i might share some. As you can see some nice coral and these pictures are only some of the ones i took.

I have to get some photos when i get out the outer reef again when the weather is good. It can be a reasonably quick trip from Bowen when the wind and swell is right or a very long trip when it is blowing 20 - 25 knots with a 2m swell (and uncomfortable).

Gloucester Island

A few weekends ago i went away fishing out of Bowen. They had the annual fishing comp up there and we thought why not give it a go. While i was up there i decided to go for a snorkel just around Gloucester Island which is just off the mainland between Airlie Beach and Bowen. When we arrived at the island it did not look like anything special from the surface but once i got in i was pleasantly surprised with the marine life and coral that was along the rocky edges. I have linked in some photos which were only taken with a basic Olympus camera but these hopefully give you some idea of just a small handful of the corals i saw.

As you are aware i cheated and just copied the post from the RTAW forum. I thought the folks on here would appreciate some of our nice corals. I am lucky enough to live within 2 hours of the reef and getting wet and generally get out once a month. Not a bad lifestyle but makes my tank look shabby every time i come back from a trip.
