View Full Version : Adjusting a new RS180 - Can't use gate valve?

I've had a brand new RS 180 for about 1 month that I am having a hard time adjusting - either under skimming or overflowing. The primary problem I'm having is with the foam adjustment valve - I can't get it just right. I have the skimmer sitting in 7" of water and the drain pipe is above the water surface, just like the instructions say.

Having used gate valves with success in other skimmers in the past with similar problems I though I would do the same. I guess if I had done more research ahead of time, I would have discovered you can't do this to newer ERs. The PVC pipe on the newer skimmers isn't standard diameter and doesn't accept standard 1 1/2" fittings, pipes, or valves. Unfortunatley I am now stuck with a $50 ER gate valve upgrade kit.

Bottom line, I guess, is that I dislike the design of the foam adjustment mechanism and wonder why they would have used odd sized pipes and fittings which makes doing custom applications extremely difficult?
