did some test running today and this is the progress so far. Running a mag 9.5 on a gate valve. If I fully open up the gate valve the it's niagra when the drain pipe enters the sump, throttle it back a 1/4 gets nice and quiet, but then return seems a little low up top. It may supposed to be this way, I'm not sure. Looking for opinions ... I will have a couple of Tunze in there for circulation. Water level in the return is a little high ... I filled it up too much. Everything looks good in case of power outage, plenty of room for the overflow.

how big is your tank? Also, is there a reason you dont have the return port going into the water instead of above the water?

I don't know why I didn't in the video, about 20 minutes ago I submerged it and was able to open the valve fully and getting really nice flow

edit 95 gallon

the returns in the first vid, as you have already said, look to be a little weak. My returns really pushes out water. Im also running a mag9.5, balled back just a hair.

once I fully open the valve it started pushing pretty well. I have about a 4 ft head. I'm really satisfied after fully opening the valve and submerging the the drain pipe return into the sump.

I was having doubts initially.

What is your drain line going into.. I can't really tell.. Is it just a tube stuck into the water or is something around the end of it?

what skimmer are you going to use? if your going to be gravity feeding a skimmer you will not be able to leave the valve wide open like that. i'm using a mag 9.5 also also for my return and a deltec ap600 skimmer. the ball valve controlling my return pump isn't even opened halfway.

From what I read you don't want more than 450 gph going through your fuge. Too fast of a flow won't allow the fuge to do it's job. I was reading that about 3 times your tank capacity per hour is fine as long as you make up the additional required flow like with the Tunze's.

I am shooting for 400 to 450 gph for mine.

I'm going EuroReef RS-135 or possibly a Tunze 9010 ( both in sump ) depending on how Dano likes his. Can you explain why the valve can't be wide open ?

I'm pushing for around the same turnover in the fuge, right now I'm at about 4.5 to 5 times turnover and I'm going for 25 x in the display.

My total is around 33 X. I actually may have to decrease the total. The two Hydor Koralia #4s really cause some strong flow and depending on what I add I may not be able to direct both properly. Changing the center one to a #3 will bring me down to 28X. Two #3s put it at 23X.

I'm probably just going run one Tunze 6010, model number I think and a controller. One should be enough, I think.

I just added some pvc to take it near the bottom of the sump, is there something else I should do as far as that's concerned ? has a elbow at the bottom

i dont have any experience with those skimmers, but with the deltec and it being gravity fed, you have to keep the water level inside the skimmer a certian height to obtain the best performance from it. you can regulate the water level in skimmer by turning it off. with the skimmer off you can see where the water level is then it must be adjusted with a ballvalve for your return.

i wish i could have more flow from my return lines, but thats why i have a closed loop.

I hear the Ice cream man!!! (second vid)
I dont have much to comment on your sump. I am glad you posted it after all the discussion in Dano's 90gal thread. I was thinking of going with one, but I have to use my 20L for now.

Have you seen that some of the Euro-Reef blems are on sale? Euro-Reef (http://commerce2.i2net.com/able5stores/stores/33/category.aspx?SID=33&Category_ID=630)

I think the site is down. I tried it from my original post, in another section. It didn't work there either. I got a "Blem" ER 80 for $149+TTT.

It worked when I tried earlier but they only list RS-80s.

They had more on there the other day. It seems less and less. I had to mull it over for a couple of days. The one I wanted was gone, so I went with my #2 choice. There was more than the RS-80 the other day is what I am saying.
