View Full Version : Quiet down overflow at the sump?

The tank is completely quiet, except where the overflow water hits the sump. It's REALLY loud, so much that I can hear it from across the house at night.
The pumps are quiet, the overflow in the display area is totally quiet, but wow, when the water hits the water in the sump, it's gurgling like crazy right now.
The end of my drain pipe is under the water, but it's still increadibly loud down there. I thought the problem would be the overflow standpipe like thing, but it really isn't.
Anybody have this issue? What have you done to quiet it down?

Do you have the drain pipe from the overflow dropping straight down? I have mine bent left and right before it enters the sump. I think it helps slow down the water a little.
How about the hole on the PVC pipe that is sitting in the sump? Is the hole covered?

it's not dropping straight, there's a turn (my sump is on the left side of the stand) but then it drops straight down from there. I have it correctly going straight down by tying it. Maybe i'll just let it go at a slight angle. I have it in the hole in the top plastic "bracing" so it sits pretty straight regardless...
the hole on the pvc pipe is above the waterline.
should it be under water? that'd be a lot of water in the sump =X

No, it's fine where you have it mounted. I'm just wondering if you could put another bend into the piping to slow down the velocity of the overflow. Worst case scenario would be putting a filter sock on the drain.
Or how about dialing back the return pump a bit to see if that'll help?

I cut the drain plumbing so it's just enough to reach, so I have no more slack =( I could go buy more at the hardware store though...
I'll try that if anything, or even a gate valve or ball valve to slow it down

Sometimes the hole in the pvc pipe may not be relieving enough back pressure and can be drilled out a bit larger to quiet it down. Kinetic you have pm

sounds good, thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to drill it out some more.

This is one thing I would really like to know if it gets resolved.
I love the Elos setups, but are they quiet?
Hope it works for you Kinetic.

they're very quiet =) the overflow is made perfectly to pair up with the plumbing and flow rate of the eheim 1260. The water dropping into the sump is a bit louder, but with the stand closed, it's not an issue. I have an open back on my stand, and I heard a little gurgling. But let me tell you, all these little issues are just troubleshooting, with all the help from Jesse at ELOS and the other members, everything gets resolved.
So an update: I drilled the hole bigger, and it quieted down considerably. Me liking to tweak things, drilled a few more holes next to it to see if it made it even better, yeah, even quieter... so I drilled three more holes, and bam it was REALLY loud, ahaha! Don't mess with the ELOS system, maybe a tad, but I think I messed that up. But anyway, luckily I had ordered a huge sheet of closed cell Neoprene that arrived today. I wrapped the holes with the neoprene and walla, no sound at all. The sump was so quiet, I could literally sleep inside of it if I was that small of a person =)
So really, if you get the drain, I'd suggest what jesse said, increase the hole size a little on the drain pvc at the sump level, and it'll be way quieter. I covered all the holes with neoprene, but there's still a little air, but neoprene also is great for sound insulation, so it was a dumb hack from my other plunders =)
I'm probably going to see if I can order a replacement piece from Jesse to correct my fiddling =P Lesson learned, listen to Jesse and leave things alone haha =) But I had to do it to try. My fix is pretty good at the moment, but I'll feel better getting the unmodified one again.

Very nice Kinetic! I am the same kind of person with the tweaking.
We have to know what will happen. I think a lot of us in this hobby are the same way.
Great Elos thread.

Is the slit in the drain pipe above or below the water? I find it quieter below the water. Also I can't remember if your stand is open back or not...

I don't have a slit, instead it's just a hole. It's waaay above the water line, close to the top of the sump, so there's no way I can have it sit below the water line =(

I think Nuuze is saying take the pvc pipe out of the slip fitting and flip it around so the hole will be low instead of high but in our case I think the larger hole is good. I got your email, thanks and I do have more of the pvc if you want to replace the "swiss cheese" model you made:) That was a joke. Oh and the clamps are 3 bucks.

haha it definitely is a swiss cheese model lol.
Is the PVC glued into that screw in fitting? If not I could probably use some pvc I have laying around.
If it is glued, I think I'll need that screw in part as well.
Let me know how much I owe you for those pieces =)
thanks again!

It's just slipped in but it is metric. I'll email you.
