Could use some advise - I have a phosban reactor 150 and a HOB (3 gal) refugium, do I need both?

My objective is to reduce excess nutrients in the tank.

The reactor is self contains and I will never worry about overflow. I can also run carbon if ever necessary.

The refug grows chaeto and is a home for pods. However, I think the small size limits its effectiveness in actually reducing nutrients and I have a good population of pods living in my (rock) tank. I do worry about the refug overflowing being a HOB.

Which do you think is the better long term equipment to have on the tank?

I can keep both if that makes sense too but, I have no sump and all this stuff hangs on my tank.

I would try and make both work for me.

If you can run both...use both.

how about simple
like getting 10 or 20 gal tank turn it into a gravity flow fuge - wouldnt take much to get it going - but would need to have it elevated enough for the gravity feed back into your tank - which isnt always possible or aesthetically pleasing - but if you can make it happen its more or less cheap and the benefits far outweigh anything else.

then keep your phosph reactor hooked up - either way keep both one way or another

If I've learned one thing so far it's "use a sump". I don't think a sump is needed to keep a reef but it sure would have made all this stuff cleaner and easier.

I've also looked at adding something above the tank. I though a shallow mangrove would be great but I don't have any room where the tank is located.

Thanks, I'l keep both. Maybe I can pump water from the tank into the reactor, from the reactor into the refug and back into the tank.

I have to figure out why my hob refug seems to over fill sometimes. I checked for snails in the return but nothing. The return just seems to slowdown from time to time causing it to fill much higher than it should...making me nervous about it overflowing.
