filter question

first time cleaning my wet dry filter well not first time but first time to do it completely ok there is a fiber pad or whatever that lies on my trickle plate that would go over the bio balls do i clean that or is that what hold my bacteria?

it will hold some bacteria, but it is mainly to filter out large particles. Most of the bacteria will be on the balls.
