View Full Version : How Good Is Feeding Romaine, And How Often?

I put a leaf of romaine lettuce in the tank every couple of days, as my angels and heniochus really enjoy ripping it to shreds. Kinda worried though that it might not be good for them too often, as it is not a marine plant. I do the same thing with nori strips, but my fish don't dig it nearly as much.
Haven't found any negative opinions or comments on the web so far, but my instincts tell me there might be a problem. Anyone know the facts?

The romaine might be fine, but it's not a natural part of the fishes' diet, so I wouldn't feed it at all, personally.

I wouldn't feed Romaine lettuce to your fish, maybe try leaf lettuce, its more natural for them.

leaf lettuce is probably worse than romaine. It's very high in water content, and contains next to no nutrients.
I'd stick with the nori, but perhaps try soaking it in selcon or another fatty acid/vitamin supplement to soften it up and make it tastier.

Some people suggest that fish have trouble digesting the cellulose and recomend to microwave it in a cup of boiling water first. Spinach leaves, broccolli and carots are also common foods for herbivoirs.

Why not just buy them the dry seaweed that's available for them in the store? What are you thinking is the advantage of store bought produce?

store bought seaweed like nori is usually far cheaper than the stuff at the aquarium shop. Around here, I can get a pack of ten sheets of nori for about a buck. That much nori used to last me a month or two.

If you cannot find nori in your supermarket, take a trip to a local oriental market, they will be certain to have it.

It was a joke. I would never feed anything to fish that does not come from the ocean and specifically from the part of the ocean they are from. Its funny that you thought I was serious!

See, I need to take everything anyone says on this board, and in this forum especially, seriously. You didn't put a smiley, or anything, and newbies read these threads looking for advice. Jokes don't always go over the internet very well.
