Keeping fish in the tank...

I recently removed my glass top from my 75 for various reasons (heat, gas exchange, constant cleaning). Now i wanted to know how to keep future fish in the tank? I have a pair of ocellaris clowns now that I'm not worried about carpet surfing but i am wanting to get a bottom dwelling blenny or goby at some time. I know a lot of people use egg crate, but a smaller blenny/goby would be able to jump through the holes, right? I was thinking egg crate with a layer of plastic screen/netting... but that might block a lot of light.

What are some ways you guys keep the fish in the tank without blocking too much light?

Egg crate should be just fine. To get out, it would need to jump perfectly straight through one of the holes. Chances are it will hit the eggcrate at some point and bounce back. You can paint the egg crate black with Krylon Fusion for plastics.

How much does egg crate effect lighting? will it be a negligible amount?

I've read somewhere that fish will be less likely to jump if you have good surface aggitation.

Ive never kept a top on any of my tanks. In 3 years only 1 fish(firefish) has jumped out. I dont have anything covering the top. I recommend using a fine mesh netting. I personally think it blends in better and doesnt block as much light as the large white egg crate does.

I have never put a top on my tank. Good surface aggitation helps and keeping fish that get along well makes a big difference. If they are HAPPY they will stay in the tank.... just my .02 cents worth...
