Hello,

When hooking up my kalk reactor this evening I discovered that my RO/DI unit has been hooked up incorrectly, explains the hair algae issue I have been combating (I have tried everything and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong).

Please look at the attached pics and notice the dark green algae on the rocks (smooth w/ no hair, at least not yet) and the bright green color which is taking off on the back of the glass (this is all smooth). Is this good and just the development of new coralline or is it hair algae getting ready to bloom?

Thanks!

you might have bits of coralline starting under that green fuzzy microalgae on the glass. coralline starts as white dots before you can really see the color.

the green fuzzy has noting to do with coralline, except maybe smothering it.

also, there are a boatload of different algae, so that green fuzz is what it is. and that would be a "micro gone wild"

me I would siphon that into a folded up piece of plastic screen down in the sump(so you can siphon forever and the algae gets caught in the screen) then remove and clean the screen to get that bio-mass out of the system.

that's why you buy a bunch of astrea snails. they won't let that crap grow on the glass if you have enough of them. this also makes it easier for coralline to start. I would put a minimum of 40-50 into a 75. I have about 30 left in my 50 gal.(put 40 in in Jan to replenish) there is nothing on any glass surface. they even get the inside of the overflow box
