View Full Version : Phosban/Phospure comparison (large pics)
I decided to start using GFO, and I was kind of curious about DFS's Phospure, which is considerably less expensive than other, brand name GFO. I purchased 150g each of Phosban and Phospure to compare the differences.

Phospure

Things that I have noticed right off include: Phospure is slightly more reddish in color
Phospure seems about twice the density of Phosban
Phosban is much dustier than Phospure.
It seems that Phospure would be less likely to be ground up and release dust into the tank. Though because it is less dense, Phosban may be more efficient overall.
I have no experience with GFO, but my initial reaction in comparing these two, is that besides being a better price, Phospure would be easier to use. Does anyone have any insight to add here?

Buy bulk GFO from two part solution there are grandular and pellets for your prefrence and alot I mean alot cheaper. It is imported strait from Germany. Don't be fooled, all the Bayoxide 33 comes from the same place so no matter where you buy it you are getting the exact same product.
Thats a nice snippet from the two part website :D but I couldn't justify spending $70 for GFO right now. Doing a quick calculation, buying an equivalent amount of phospure as the 4.5lbs of bulk gfo, it would only be about $2 more. Buying 10-20 lbs of bulk would certainly be a savings.
Quick question though.. if these are the same products, why do they look so different?

I have tried all that stuff and still have not come up with better results then from Warner Marines PhoSar. The PhoSar HC is even better.
And, believe me, my tank is a virtual PO4 breading ground as I always overfeed my fish. :D

Phospure is great stuff and at bulk price with having to buy bulk.
Works as good as any other GFO in my opinion.
Others are good products but just cost more....

The porosity of phosphate media is very important, and it's quite possible that the various vendor's products are quite different in capacity, since they do seem to treat them. I don't know of any firm quantitative data, though.

all the Bayoxide 33
But not all Bayoxide 33 is the same:D It is a family of GFO's and there are letters assigned to them i.e., E33, E33P, etc. Some are wet and some are dry. T-P is selling the better dry. And may GFO"S are these two and all are bought from Severn Trent Services. Warner Marine is not Bayoxide, it is much more porousand has much hiher capacity.

I am interested in starting a phos reactor and im wondering wich media is the best. I cant help but notice the price difference in the two and im wondering why warner marine is cheaper AND better, is there a catch? Does it not last as long? Do you have to use more Phosar than phosban?

Warner Marine Research PHOSaR HC is not cheap at all.

You can use less PHOSaR HC than Phosban and "ounce for ounce" the PHOSaR HC will last longer. Second, PHOSaR HC is more dense and harder so there is less breakage. Third, PHOSaR HC can be more easily used in a canister filter with less issues.
Price
and there is PHOSaR and PHOSaR HC, they are not the same.
WMR PHOSaR 500gm = $ 31.00
WMR PHOSaR HC 400gm = $ 50.00
TLF Phosban 454gm = $31.00

Phosar (not hc) is 23.99 for 500 grams where as Phosban is 37.99 for 454 grams.
400 grams of Phosar HC is 37.99
Wich should i go for?
Edit:
Im leaning tward 500 grams of phosar.
I will be running this in a reactor on about 100 gallons of water. Wich will last me longer and wich will i have to use less of.

HC is on top. Regular Phosar on bottom.
