I am very new to all of this and am searching for a few answers. I have an Eheim 2028 canister for my 125g tank. There are three trays. Two filled with substrat pro and one filled with ehfimech. Am I supposed to change this media periodically or let it ride so it can develop bacteria colonies. If so how often? Also what is the life of the filter pad? And should I use a carbon one? Thanks

In a SW tank a canister has it place but not as a bio-filter. You don't want bacteria growing on the filter media as it promotes nitrate production. The canisters are great for water polishing or running a chemical media like activated carbon or phosphate sponge. If you use a filter pad you want to clean it weekly.
