nobody said those were bad since you mentioned you got a "filmtek" membrane. and i also believe pureh20 sells units on ebay as well. but think again if you think you will get a good unit on ebay for under 100 bucks.as for the zero tds after ro, i myself get zero after my ro but my tap water has a tds of 55 out of the tap, so there you have it.

in the end....you get what you pay for.

if he actually got 2 years out of it with zero TDS how could you claim you get what you pay for? it seems he paid less and got more.

yeah, the tds on my tap water is only 150 before ro/di, but 2 years is pretty good for 50 bucks worth of filters...

I have 2 Ebay units, an Aquasafe systems and a Filters Direct units. So far they have been fine. The only thing I haven't been fond of is the horizontal DI canister.

whats wrong with the horizontal di filter?

tends to let the media settle on the bottom, while the un-DI water flows over the top of it.

So what is the best RO membrane to get? I think the cannisters are universal size, so can I upgrade my cheap ebay unit with a good RO membrane?

The Dow Filmtec 60 or 75 GPD w/ 98% rejection is very popular with the better units. Some inexpensive ebay filters may use "seconds or inferior membranes." You want to protect the membrane with a good carbon block filter, like a Matrix filter down to .5 microns. A sediment filter of 1 micron is usually good infront of carbon block.
Reefgeek.com, two part solutions, and thefilterguys.biz are a few that have some good quality filters & membranes at good prices. Spectrapure.com has the best selection of DI cartridges.

Other than that, the shells and membrane housings are all universal, really not much to them.
