This is a very interesting idea. There are also colored dead corals that would look good as well. It would be nice to see some pics if you have this kid of tank!

i have heard that they get dirty really fast and are a pain to clean....imo more of an eye sore than anything

They look great when set up.
If high calcium is maintained, they can look quite nice in time once coraline covers everything.
But more often than not they get a layer of mulm and brown / green nuisance algae and just look horrible after about 6 months, requiring either replacement or complete power washing / bleaching.

Just my thoughts......
