I was just wondering what is an acceptable amount of temperature variation? I have a 30 gal and during the day the water is about 80 degrees and at night it will cool down to around 78.5. I was just wondering if this amount of change was ok or do I need to get a better heating system so that it will stay more constant?

2-3 degrees change over a day is not bad (IMO), so your fine.

Mine varies from 78-82. You'll be fine.
