drs. foster/smith makes a power filter that has a built in floating surface skimmer that would be perfect for that tank. if you don't overfeed and do a 2 gallon weekly water change you won't need a protein skimmer. i think running carbon is very important on smaller tanks also.

ok, get an aqua-clear filter and turn it into a Fuge, very easy to do. IMO skimmers should be used on tanks 20g+, however it will not hurt to have one. Running carbon is a good thing at times, but after about 3-7 days it is no longer useful and could start leaching back into the water. I would suggest Chemi-Pure, like carbon, but i have seen better from Chemi-Pure.

I have a 10g, and run a few diff PFs. A Mini penguin with the stock cartridges (cheap and through, no bio-wheel) that have a lil carbon; a Rio nano skimmer for oxygenation and light skimming (skimming really not needed with frequent WC, of course) and a Whisper 10 with 1/2lb LR rubble and small bale of chaeto, lit by a desk lamp (13w PC 6500K). Lots o' flow, all very cheap. They take up the whole back side of the tank. What a lot of people do is buy a new AC 110 or 70 and mod into a 'fuge. I had these laying around, so I couldn't justify new PFs.

Again, "just my $0.02" as everyone says.

get yourself and aquaclear and turn it into a fuge as stated b4 and dont waste your cash on a skimmer unless you plan on keeping tons of SPS!!! all you need to do is stay on top of your water changes :) good luck.

I have an aqua clear 70 that I put on my 3g. I did a fuge mod to it and it works perfect. You can add a heater, LR, Macro algae, and whatever other filtration stuff you need. Looks clean and runs quiet.

really all you need to do is silicon a piece of acrylic/glass about .25-.75" away from the pump output (in the filter) and then put a light over it. Some but a mesh/eggcrate on the waterfall part so it can improve surface skimming.

Aquaclear Mod (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=601201&highlight=how+to+DIY+an)

I didn't do that though. My aquaclear is filled with LR rubble and has no lighting. Works for me ............
