View Full Version : t-5 vs vho

tring to find out some things about t-5 lighting . i am just getting back in things after about 4 years of having my 110 down .i had vho before but i see that a lot of people are going to t-5s now . my tank is 6ft all the t-5s that i find are 60 in. and alot less output so why do t-5 over vho .......output for bulb length 60 is 80 watts vs 160 for vho 72 in

Well, the short answer is that watts is a unit of power consumption, not light output. T5s, especially with a good individual reflector, produce more PAR (photosynthetically available radiation) per unit of power consumed than VHO bulbs in the minds of many aquarists (myself included.) This is a difficult thing to show experimentally however so there is still a lot of debate on the relative efficiency T5 vs MH. That being said, I still like, and use, the VHO actinic bulbs myself for color.

VHO is meant to tint the water color in your tank.. T5's can actually support life...

well i ask because i was thinking about putting 2 250 mh on the tank with t-5 or vho also and i cant seem to find much about the t-5 's

6' tanks are a litle hard for T5s because of their standard lengths. I use 8 of the 3' bulbs on my tank for PAR and use 2 of the 6' VHOs for actinic supplementation. Some folks just use the 5' bulnbs and stagger them a bit though. My issue with that is that you have the greatest concentration of light right in the middle of the tank and directly over the center brace :)

so if i plan on the mh is the vho the way togo for supplement or t5

because i have to 660s i will have to send in for the t5 mod if i use t5

i run the 5' on my 180, but it has the overflow on one end which takes up 6".

i love the t5s but think they are best when run in combination with some mhs'

VHO should be fine, especially in your situation. what makes T5 better is that you can fit more over the tank and the individual reflectors better direct most of the light produced to the tank.

if ur going with mh for the main lights and need something for actinics go with the vho.

well the more i read about the t5s i may just do those but with 2 660s does anyone know how many bulbs i could run

well found out i can run4 3ft t5s and if what i see everyone saying is true i think i should be able to get 12 of them in my canopy .. will have to get one more 660
