What kind of livestock should I get to keep my live sand bed healthy?

Sand-sifting stars do nothing but deplete the sandbed of nutrifing bacteria and end up starving. I have had expierences with sand-sifting gobies and they also do the same endless you get them to eat frozen food... just my .02 cents
