Filter Necessary?

If i have a protein skimmer in my sump do i still need some sort of filter? Like a hanging one or a canister.

No, the LR and skimmer should be enough. I sometimes put a filter sock on my drain in the sump if nessasary.

I keep a sps tank with only lr, power heads and a good skimmer

Nice to have a canister filter handy for ....1) Micron water filtering during water changes, 2) to run carbon if needed, 3) can also throw a bag of phosban or nitrate remover in it, 4) run it empty for extra flow, 5) ect.

I always have a spare HOT magnum around for this reason. :)
