Lots of sources say a 55 gallon is ok for a harlequin tusk. How about a 65 gallon (36x18x24)? I'm thinking that's still too small but want to find out what everyone on here thinks.

What else is in the 65G? They end up about 10". May be ok depending on what else in there. I sold mine because it was way too aggressive with my puffers. He would chase them around quite a lot.

Nothing, this is just a planning stage. I was thinking the only other inhabitants would be a maroon clown and maybe a dwarf lionfish of some sort.

I wouldn't try it. As Justin said, they reach about 7-8" on average, 10" max. I think that would be a little cramped in a 3' tank.

I have a tusk about 4 in. in my 58g with a maroon, coral beauty, christmas wrasse & longnose hawk. The tusk never messed with the maroon or beauty, but I added the wrasse & hawk a week ago and the tusk is chasing them around to much, so I believe his size requires a larger tank & my 150g isnt going to ready for a while, so I'm going to fish him out tomorrow. I love the fish and will get another some day when my 150 is ready.
so long story short I'd pass on him for now.

My dad has a juvi (~2.5") Tusk in his 65 gal. Was planned for a 90 but in the 29gal temp tank, a Humu trigger didn't take too kindly to her. That said, she paces the 65gal pretty good and if she wants, she's at the other side in an instant. I think the extra foot of the 55gal is better for a Tusk then the extra width of a 65gal. I can't imagine any Tusk too much bigger in there, maybe with low amounts of live rock.

Curious as to why people are intent on crowding large aggressive fish in small quarters. It's kinda like keeping 4 drunks in an elevator :)

I'd say unless the 65g is a temporary home... that you want to MINIMUM 90g for a juvi and 120g+ for an adult.
