What kind of Tang is this?

Hey everyone. I picked up this guy for $20.00 at a LFS. He was in bad shape. Definitely has ich.

Anyways what kind of tang is it? I think its an Acanthuras blochi(Ringtail Surgeonfish) or Acanthuras Dussemeiri(palani tang). Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

It has ich and you still put him into your display tank?

Great Find! I think it may be a blochii tang. rather odd fish but not easy to find.

Yes I did put it right into my display. I hope it will overcome the ich and i hope it won't show up on any of my other fish. Heh. However i have put other fish into my display with visible signs of ich, i.e a hippo tang and eventually the ich spots were no longer visible. I know im taking a risk by adding fish in this manner without qt. Here's to hoping everything goes well :) Anyways back to the question of what kind of tang is this?

Ive seen a couple of those pop up lately; I believe Acanthurus blochii is correct.

Anyone have an adult? How big will it get? I think I have one of those too. It was sold to me as a Palani.

I think is a Acanthurus bahianus, ask the LFS if is from the Caribbean.

I think it is either a A. Bariene or A. Blochii.
Both get very big (over a foot) but are very attractive fish when their full adult colors start showing up.

it's a juvenile dussumeiri or eystripe surgeonfish.

I don't think its a dussumers. If I remember correct dussumers have white tail spines.

You are right, it is a Ringtail surgeonfish (blochii)

It is a Acanthurus bahianus, I got one a time ago also I snorkel every Saturday and saw thems.

blochii or xanthopterus. They aren't very rare at all. Are they rare over there?

Brown pectoral fins

Overall olive brown to black; white band on caudal peduncle

I found that live aquaria divers den has a tang very similar to mine labeled as an Dussumieri.

Yes I would say somewhat so. You definitely don't walk into many LFS's to see any of the Dussumieris or Blochiis very often.

This fish is not rare in the wild but it is somewhat rare in the US trade mainly due to the colors of the juveniles and the eventual size of the adults. Most stores do not just bring them in unless they have a special request from someone who really appreciates the beauty of these fish and has a tank large enough to support its eventual growth.
