View Full Version : Coral Banded Shrimp with a Golden CBS?

I read that you shouldn't put Coral Banded Shrimp together unless they are a mated pair. Does this also apply to one coral banded shrimp and one golden coral banded shrimp? Will they fight? Also, is there some sort of rule or theory that you should only put so many shrimp in one tank? I'm thinking of temporarily putting the Gold CBS in my 54 Gallon Reef tank, but it already has a CBS, and cleaner shrimp, and 2 peppermint shrimp, along with 2 porcelain crabs and 2 emerald crabs, and the usual clean up crew guys...hermits, snails, etc.
Any reason why I shouldn't put the Gold CBS in there?
Thanks!
They'll probably eat everything else in the tank. CBS are predators, and readily take after fish.

NOOOO!
CBS will kill the golden CBS unless it's a very large one.
don't don't don't! CBS/GCBS are very territorial... but they are more territorial against their own species than other species of shrimp.
This is from someone that's had mated CBS and mated GCBS. The only way to introduce two of the same species is if you know how to sex them and even then it's not 100% guarantee they won't fight/kill.
you're also lucky the following is working out
" CBS, and cleaner shrimp, and 2 peppermint shrimp,"
I wish I still had mine but I had to move from CA to TX =(

Thanks guys for your advice. When I got the CBS he was tiny, but he's a lot bigger now. I had no idea they would eat fish. The LFS must have conveniently forgotten to warn me of that...and I got it a few months before joining RC, otherwise I would have asked about him first. I researched them online, but all I found was that they are territorial with other CBS.
I won't put them in together, thanks to your advice. What kind of fish do they eat? I have a firefish, 2 ocellaris clowns, a yellow tang, and possibly a black capped basslett- I haven't seen him since the day I added him to the tank though...and then there's the shrimp and other guys I mentioned. I haven't noticed any aggressive behavior so far.

I have a CBS, Skunk cleaner shrimp and 3 peppermint shrimps all living peacefully in a 75 gallon for 5 months. It must be hit and miss with CBS because mine has been very peaceful.

yea, CBS can be hit and miss but they tend to be more territorial against other CBS/GCBS than other types of shrimp. I said he/she was lucky mostly b/c of the size of their tank (54g)... which in my opinion is the line =)
" What kind of fish do they eat?"
If he was large enough he could possibly get your firefish or occellaris... but honestly, I wouldn't worry about it - they won't touch them unless they're already about to die, are dead or are pretty sick and can'barely swim. They're more scavenger than predator.
