They don't have individual reflectors for each bulb, not much better then power compact lights.

The catalina t5's now have individual reflectors in there fixture's. They look very nice, but the SLR are very small in diameter, so there still not there, but its a huge improvement. They use workhorse ballasts which are fine imo. Not the best by any means but they work. Depending on your tank the catalina's will most likely work just fine. But not so much these jebo's.

Na, for t5's its a must to have individual reflectors to maximize the bulb's. If not then you may as well get vho's imo. I'd look for a used setup or retrofit in your hood. Whats your budget and is this for your 120g, so your talkin a 48" tank thats 24" wide? I think your going to need a 8x54w setup for anything so you may be better off with a 2x250w mh setup.

Here's the fixture i'm talking about that is cheap with individual reflectors. I'm sure the bulb's aren't to hot but it may be an ok light.

no parabolic reflectors= cancels t5's advantages
4 bulbs= no light

Ok i see.Yeha this is for my 120 but i did just find a 240 im going to call here in a few minutes,i shouldnt but i cant help myslef, lol.I really dont want to go metal haldie kind of bulky, but i have seen the nice ones mounted in the tops but those are pretty pricy and im going to make a wood top for my tank so maybe i could just get those retro kits and moutn them up in there or somthing.Theres a guy on craigslist who has a 55 salt setup with 440 watts vho he wants 350 for the whole setup,he wont just sell the lights it does come with some other stuff like ro/di which i could use so i think it would be worth it.but i dont want to get that if vhos are dated technology.

I'd pass on the VHO's, if your going to have a canopy you'll be able to find some great deals in the used forum. Some 48' IC retro's for cheap. Just give it some time and you'll have some in no time.
