Need help with plumbing design

I'm starting a new 90 gal reef with a sump. I'm having a hard time finding diagrams or descriptions of which order things should be plumbed in. I'm not sure where gate valves, check valves and things like that should be positioned. If anyone knows were I could find some information I would greatly appreciate it.

if you go to a forum where they have tank builds, there is enough plumbing to make your head spin.
