I believe the shortest T5NO is 12" (http://www.pegasusassociates.com/FluorescentT5Lamps.html) and the shortest T5HO is 22".

Metal Halide. IS your tank 20" tall or deep? Sounds like your canopy is 16"x16" but you listed your dimensions as the tank being 16" long 16" tall and 20" deep? I'd go with a metal halide regardless, a nice small 150w unit, depending on bulb color, add small actinics.

the tank is a cube 16 in width 16'' in length and 20'' in hight.

I was thinking the same thing about the 150w MH's, do you think they're are any other precautions I could take besides fans to keep it cool enough? I don't want a meltdown!

also do you think 150w would be enought for 20" in hight?

I really wonder how hot it would get? is it possible to not get the canopy to warp?
