I'm thinking of painting the back of my tank, like how the fish show up against the black backgrounds I've seen in some others. From what I've read you can use a couple coats of latex, but I'm not sure if those I've seen are flat or gloss black.
Can any of you tell what you used and your preferences?

Go to your local Fish Store and they will have a special plastic vinyl that can be used. One side is blue and the other side is black.
I recommend that instead of permanently painting your fish tank.

I painted mine with Krylon oil-based paint, flat black. I don't think gloss, vs. semi-gloss vs. flat will make a big difference. I think it looks great and makes everything stand out. But I know some people don't like permanently altering their tank.

From what I have seen and experienced, it does not matter if it is gloss, semi-gloss or flat. It all looks alike after going through glass and water.

I was scared to paint my tank, And I am now glad that I did not as I have switched colors a couple of times from black to blue.

I used Limo Black window tint on the back of mine...$10. No fumes, no runs, etc.

i painted a 1/8in thick piece of plexi glass the exact size of my back glass with black krylon fusion (just paint one side) and then i used velcro to stick to the back of my tank, that way i can remove or change color if i changed my mind about the color or wated to use my tank as a room divider in the future
