Can a non-live substrate like Tropic Isle Tahitian Moon Sand (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+10741+7324&pcatid=7324) and live substrates such as Arag-Alive (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+10741+7318&pcatid=7318) be mixed together? If they can, will the non-live sand become live sand? Just wondering how it all works. Thanks.

Save some cash and dont worry about the Live sand. You really dont need it. mabe get cup of sand of a buddy to seed regular sand.

Yes it will and you never know if the LS you are buying is actually live. Many threads on this subject. But it for looks and and base sand will get seeded. All you need is a handfull of LS to seed the whl tank , just takes longer

That packaged "live sand" generally refers to the fact that it's pre-seeded with bacteria. Whether that's true or not, who knows. It does not contain all the other micro critters that make a sandbed healthy. As mentioned above, a cup of sand from a fellow reefer's system will seed your system with bacteria, and should also introduce some other necessary critters as well. IMO, the packaged "live sand" is overpriced (as if there's such a thing in this hobby).
